Finally, I can show you pictures of how the Spring makeover I did with Lowe’s Home Improvement turned out! You may remember a few months ago, I asked readers to submit any spaces that were in need of a refresh and from hundreds of applicants, one was selected. In April, my assistant Katie and I traveled to Utah to create a colorful outdoor space for Jamie, a special education teacher, her husband and their three kids.
Jamie’s family has lived in their Utah home for several years, but have yet to enjoy a Summer on their patio. Due to her younger son’s medical condition that has required multiple surgeries, her family has spent the last couple of summers in Florida to be near his doctor. I am happy to report he’s doing great, and they’ll finally be able to enjoy their outside space together. (She told me they just hosted her oldest son’s graduation party on the patio yesterday.)
Remember where we started?
Another before (and one of the photos Jamie submitted with her application for the makeover). . .
(Notice I pulled the same built-in grill trick that I posted about here.)
Jamie and her family were a joy to work with; they were up for anything! Before we arrived, I gave her very few clues about the direction we were going for the makeover, which was a lot of fun. The overall color scheme is red and shades of blue, but the chartreuse door adds a little bit of unexpected color. We also repainted the door trim and railings a glossy black:
Since her patio is so long, I wanted to create several seating areas. (She often hosts her extended family for dinner.) We were able to give her a conversation area with four comfy chairs, a dining area and another small bistro table by the grill. A rug and potted trees are a great way to break up the different spaces visually.
We were lucky that she already had a big pergola in place. The team of Lowe’s volunteers helped us hang the string lights—perfect for extra lighting since there is only the one lantern pendant that we changed out by the door.
The painted concrete steps were the last project of the day. (Tutorial coming in another post soon.)

A huge thanks to Lindsay Salazar Photography for capturing such beautiful images.
