Coastal + Collected: A Florida Dream Home

Occasionally, as I’m looking for material for my Saturday 6, I come across a project so good that it deserves its own post. Erika Powell’s Florida home–featured in Garden & Gun–is one of those. I used to soak up her blog when she posted more often. So, I was really happy to study all of the details she included in her family’s own waterfront retreat. It’s coastal without being theme-y in any way and collected without being cluttered. And the amenities are practical and perfect for waterfront living. (Outdoor bathtub!)

I love that she went for an exterior paint color that seamlessly blends into the trees that surround it.

That tub! Such a fun and useful addition. I’d soak there every night–although my family might run away in horror. . .

Notice how the tall planters behind the tub serve as a buffer between the window.

Calm, soothing colors throughout contribute to the coastal feel. No beachy pastels here!

Great use of texture in the neutral spaces–woven barstools in the kitchen, small rattan tables tucked away in the living room.

I’m really loving all of the muted, patina finishes on the lighting and fixtures. Simple and understated.

Maybe you don’t have to recover everything in your house. Notice the bench. A table runner or table cloth carefully draped might do the trick.

You can’t go wrong with an oversized bedside lamp.

I like that she took advantage of the opportunity between the windows to hang something interesting.

Not a design detail but just a note: that playhouse would’ve made me ridiculously happy as a kid.

Oversized canvas art is a great addition to a covered porch.

Table runners (on coffee tables and draped on the backs of chairs) are an easy way to cozy up a space.

Real Life, Real Style: Megan’s Cape Cod

I actually met Megan before we moved, when our kids were in kindergarten together. I discovered she also loved design and found her blog. She recently had a baby and moved into a new home (busy girl!). Fortunately, I emailed her about this series just before they started packing up, and she graciously snapped some pictures for me to share.

Our humble abode is a cape cod style home built in 1940. It’s located in the cutest little downtown of Belmont, NC.

Our very talkative and energetic six-year-old son, Avett,
Our newest three-month-old baby boy, Myer,
Our loving, jumping, trash-eating two-year-old English Golden Retriever, Jake,
And me, an HR professional by trade and business owner/home decorator by love.

Eclectic/transitional. I love to scour antique malls for timeless pieces, find deals through Craigslist, estate sales, and yard sales for quality furnishings that I can reupholster time and time again, and then throw in some affordable modern elements that I can source from the comfort of my living room. I love a home that is cozy, comfortable, and beautiful. I appreciate statements whether it be in paint color, wall coverings, or textiles and have been trying to do more of it in both my home and my clients’ (see black master bedroom!). I’m excited to be even bolder in our new home and hope Emily will let me come back to share!

Real_life_favorite_thing The character! Think bookshelves, china cabinets, built-in armoires, cedar closets, aged hardwoods, thick trim /molding. Oh, and the windows—so many of them! During the day, our home is filled with sunlight and at night, lit up by my lamp obsession.
