I recently experimented with moving the dishes out of my china cabinet and using it for books instead. Sometimes, it’s fun to play around with how you’re displaying the things you love and what you’re using for storage. Ultimately, I decided that it worked better functionally to house dishes in this spot after I lived with the change for a few days. But, don’t worry–I took pictures first. Here’s how I styled this cabinet two ways:
Which look do you prefer?
Also, a few of you have asked for the green paint color on the back of the cabinet. It’s Alexandrite (SW0060) by Sherwin Williams. See the “before and after” in our last house here.
I love the books !!!!
However, when dishes make more sense with how you live then the china & glassware is a beautiful look as well. If it were me, I would mix a few books as risers for bowls or a platter & add a few to each shelf. Might even display a few in the back with the book front facing out to add depth & color. Love all of your design ideas & know you will style it beautifully!
Great idea–thank you, Penny!
since it’s the dining room- dishes! and should you move that piece into another room- then books!!
Good call to use the cabinet for dishes. I have trouble making pleasing vignettes but you nailed it.
Em, I kinda dig the books! But ultimately, I would want (for you and your fam) what makes the most sense for function and how you live. You do you!

Dishes or books? It’s like choosing a favorite child! Both are beautiful, Emily.
It looks really good both ways! I guess it depends on how you use the room and what you need storage for the most.

Nicely done! I love the dishes and how they show more of the pretty green paint. Somehow shelves always appeal to me more when there’s about 1/3 open space.
Beautiful cabinet! I love the dishes in it because they show off the gorgeous green back!
