A Bold Color Forecast for 2023

October 18, 2022

I don’t tend to put a lot of weight in design trend predictions or color forecasts, but I thought the “color of the year” announced by Benjamin Moore last week was a surprisingly bold choice. According to the “experts”, the trend for 2023 is pretty colorful, with Raspberry Blush as the star of the show. I have to wonder if it’s all a revolt against so many years of gray and white and the ever-popular farmhouse style that continues to stick around. I do feel like you’re either drawn to color or you’re not, so I’m sure they’ve gotten a lot of strong feedback about this palette.

I do, however, think these color suggestions can be useful for more than just choosing a new shade for your walls. To illustrate, I put a design together showing how I would incorporate these colors in a fun–and even sophisticated–living room with furnishings, fabrics and art. I actually imagine this space with white or light gray walls. (So maybe you don’t have to repaint everything to be “trendy” after all.)

What are your thoughts on the 2023 color forecast?

Although I personally wouldn’t do it (afraid of color unless its blue), I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I’m SO sick of grays and modern farmhouse. Thanks for the inspiration board! Love these!

I’m crazy about this palette; it’s everything I love all together! A few years ago I took almost exactly your suggestions on accessorizing a kitchen with oak cabinets and I still LOVE it (too shy to send you photos but it’s made all the difference!). Tempted to do the same with this mood board. :) you’re killing it with these posts, so glad to have you back!

I am not drawn to color. But I have missed you. These sort of posts with design musings coupled with examples to help understand it all are what I liked most about your blog.

I didn’t love most of the specific colors but agree that it’s a nice turn from the very very neutral colors we’ve been surrounded with for years.

This mood board is really fabulous! I could totally live in this space…chocolate brown mixed with deep/bright pink? Absolutely!!! Love the accents of blues and greens sprinkled throughout.

I love color but was very disappointed when I first saw this palette as I didn’t like the colors. Emily, you did a fantastic job on this mood board, allowing me to see these colors in a new way! Great post.

I love this mix! I’m currently trying to move away from light blue walls and too much brown furniture and into a more eclectic beachy look by. I have a new light gray love seat and chair and have been looking to mix in coral and a some shade of lime or chartreuse, but love the dark navy as well, so this palette suits me perfectly.

This post us really helpful to me! We’re doing a big remodel and I have a specific color palette in mind in a mid century style. I’m struggling with how to bring my desired colors to life in the rooms without having too much going on and being too contrived. Your mood board gives me a template to consider. Hope that makes sense. Thank you!
