This post is for those of you who feel stuck when it comes to “finishing” a room. You may have neutral sofas and neutral walls but the rest of it just isn’t coming together. It’s easy to pick up a piece here or there but sometimes it helps to have an overall plan for where you’re headed. I like the idea of putting together a grouping of can’t-go-wrong accessories to use as a first layer. (There’s always room to add your special touches over time.) This is the first in a series of “Styling Simplified” posts where I’ll focus on a specific style and recommend my go-to accessories for that space. I started with what I know best: cozy traditional.
All of the product images are linked but this is also meant to be a guide. Pin it, email it to yourself or screenshot it so you have it on your phone the next time you’re shopping and can’t remember what it was you were looking for in the first place. I also included a paint palette (all of these are Benjamin Moore colors) inspired by the accessories.
Is this helpful? What other styles would you like to see?
yes, this is very helpful as I am a visible learner and immediately can feel what I’m drawn to when there’s a grouping under a category. I can see how they relate with each other, like a good conversation.
My style is more “organic modern,” if that makes sense. For me, organic can move into boho too easily sometimes so I used to wonder if I’m boho! By organic, I really mean texture. That said, I have a more traditional dining room off the kitchen and try to add organic/texture and carry my color scheme over to that area as well. And by organic, I also mean eclectic as I like to incl a wild card in the mix but I work to integrate it so it feels cohesive.
Helpful! Love this rug! I am currently painting our master bedroom but am lacking a vision for it. Do you start with accessories then pick paint colors for the rooms in your home or do you pick the paint color first?Thank you!
I think it’s almost always easier to choose the paint color last. That way, you can pull a color from a rug, art, fabric, etc.
Love this! What about trying Southern coastal beach cottage?
Love this series! I would like to see cottage and/or farmhouse. Thanks!
Lovely, timeless and affordable. Thank you.
Super helpful and thank you so much! This is exactly where I get stumped too many times and spend money on things that don’t give the look I’m after. Looking forward to your other posts as well!
This type of post is fun. And it’s very helpful.
I like a mix of mid-century/vintage & modern. What can you come up with?
I love this type of post. They’re so helpful.
What kind of accessories would work in the bedroom?
I love this! Both the idea and this particular style. Could you also do a slightly more eclectic, slightly maximalist group with more color? And a clean-lined preppy style? Personally, I just love YOUR style.
Yes, ma’am, this is helpful! This is the look I’m going for in the room I now call “The Frat House”, aka the family room where our three pre-teen/teen boys are inadvertently destroying the space that used to look pretty good. Thank you!
Nature inspired or organic is my favorite style. I love earthy palettes and anything that resembles a spa like contemporary ambiance
The first layer to finish eclectic/contemporary style. I have always had a traditional styled home and two years ago, purchased a more contemporary home and started over with most of our furniture and accessories. I have great artwork, but need finishing touches and suggestion for a floor lamp in the living area.
Great idea for a series! I love your choices for “cozy traditional” (my personal favorite). Well done!
