I added a seagrass runner to our kitchen several months ago because I thought it could use a little texture and honestly, because it was $32. I thought it was worth taking a chance even if it didn’t hold up to this extremely high traffic area between our island and stove.
As it turns out, I had this post halfway put together when, on my way out the door to church with all five kids, I dropped an entire smoothie on the rug (and myself). The kids thought this was hysterical, of course. I did not. So, I can personally attest to the fact that this is a fabulous option for the kitchen. I threw it out in the driveway, hosed it off and let it dry in the sun. You can’t see any evidence of the smoothie.
(In case you’re wondering: sandals, jeans)
My other requirements for a hardworking runner in the kitchen and/or entryway? It has to be easy to vacuum in a great texture or else, a very forgiving pattern. Here are a few more good options:
By the way, I ordered the 6′ option for our kitchen but it also comes in a 8′ option. (I didn’t need a rug pad.)
You can read more about our honed granite countertops here.

The smoothie test is a great testament to the durability of your kitchen rug!!! I’ve tried a number of runners between the stove and the sink and have ended up throwing all of them out because they get so gross. I think I’ll tey this seagrass one. It looks and sounds like a good one!
Oh man, perfect timing! We’re having the kitchen redone right now and just began looking at runners online yesterday. I think I’ll go with one of the outdoor rugs since we’re not what you would call gentle on them. Thank you so much for the info and links.
Seagrass rugs are my favorite! They don’t show crumbs, dog hair, dust, etc. I had a big one in my kitchen, spilled ketchup and other things on it, and just wiped it up with a damp paper towel. One word of caution though: if it has a rubber backing, those tend to disintegrate over time and can stick to the wood floor. We discovere this recently when we moved. Unable to get “dots” of the backing up, I called several professionals. Their advice: rubbing alcohol. I spent hours on my knees scrubbing the backing, but it eventually came off!
Just a word of caution… I bought a rubber-backed seagrass rug to use on wood floors in one of our rooms. I did not use a rug pad. Biggest mistake ever. When my husband and I removed it to paint the room, rubber bits from the rug were stuck to the floor, and basically ruined the hardwoods. I tried everything Google suggested, but to no avail. We have a new rug (with a pad) covering the damaged floor. We will eventually have to have them resanded. Spend a few extra bucks for the pad.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve had it for several months but I may go back and add the pad just to be safe.
What do you think of the ones at IKEA? I’ve had them in my kitchen for a year now and they have held up very well and the price can’t be beat.
I haven’t had one from IKEA but you’re right about the prices!
I have to know where your giant bulletin board came from. Looking for just that very thing for my office. Thanks!
It’s from Ballard Designs.
I vouch for the Safavieh Seagrass as well! I have it layered over carpet in our dining room and it has taken a beating from kids and dogs and still looks great. Bought it on sale from Target more than a year ago.
Hi Emily, Is it okay on bare feet or does it hurt?
Thanks,
Susan
It’s not super soft but I’m usually a sock wearer anyway. :)
I have one just like this with red trim in my kitchen. I feel so stylish now that I see yours Emily!!
I spilled wet coffee grounds on mine one morning. 🙄 Mine is smaller so I took a chance and put it in my washer on delicate. It came out beautifully.
xoxo,
Melissa
That’s always a great way to start your morning. ;)
Oh boy. That was one of those mornings for sure.
I hope you and your family have a great weekend!
This post comes at a perfect time! And THANK YOU for living with it for a few months of wear and vacuuming before posting it, so we can know how it has held up. I’ve looked at this line of sisal and seagrass on Overstock, but wasn’t sure how they’d hold up. :)
Thank you for the information. We need a new runner in our kitchen. I think I’ll try this one:)
I have a Seagrass rug in my living room & it doesn’t show a thing. I’ve had mine for years & the only issue I’ve had is the light colored binding tape gets dirty. I’d never get anything else.
I loved the runner but the shipping was $42.00, (more than the cost of the rug). If I spent another $20.00 than shipping would be free. Did anyone else have this experience?
On Overstock?? I’ve never seen shipping over $5…
