I can hardly believe I just typed the word “teenage.” Wasn’t I just blogging about sending him off to kindergarten? Whether I like it or not, teenage-dom is coming for us fast (in just a few days!), and I promised my oldest son we’d finally pull his room together. Our/his first priority was to create a workspace in the little niche by his closet. He’s gotten really into making and editing videos and I’m happy to support this hobby. (How good would an in-house videographer be for my blog?!)
We were both up for a change and agreed on darker walls. Paint is almost always the easiest and most economical way to make a dramatic design difference. I used BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ULTRA® Interior Paint & Primer in One for this project and chose a new color from their 2018 color trends palette. BEHR recently named “In the Moment” (a tranquil blueish green) as their first ever “Color of the Year”, but I opted for something a little bolder for his room.
My almost-teenager and I decided on a deep green color called Equilibrium. The color is earthy and cozy and is dramatic without being too “in your face.” (This paint goes on extremely well; I could’ve probably gotten away with one coat. And, I’m happy to report there was no strong paint smell. He was able to sleep in his room the same night.)
The official “before and after.”
So that the room didn’t feel too dark, I kept the trim white, brought in (my) white parsons desk, and reused the colorful flags in white frames from his old room.
When using a darker paint color, I also like to pull in a natural wood element or two and brass accents.
I also used the same paint color and some painter’s tape to quickly dress up a plain bulletin board.
Whether we’ll ever see him again is yet to be seen, but we’re both happy with the space. :)

oh my gosh i love the color! i just took sawyer out to breakfast before school just to have a little catch up- he’s in 7th grade now. i was sitting across from him and seeing my little kindergartener, too… i feel you.
They do grow so fast!!! My three boys all passed me in height, and that really hit me hard! Love the new paint color and desk area! Styled beautifully.
What a sweet space! love that office chair–does it rock, back and forth? is it adjustible (to raise and lower its height)?
I am due to paint the entire great room and adjoining rooms though I may pay to have that done. Deciding on a neutral color is so hard! I’ll get there . . .
Emily, the room looks great! You are missing any reference to the actual paint color though. Looks like maybe you were planning to go back later and add it in but published first. :)
3rd paragraph ;)
Maybe I’m seeing things too but here is how your sentence looks on my computer…”My almost-teenager and I decided on a . The color is earthy and cozy” And then when I look down at the bottom there is no “one” that I would assume would link me to the paint color but there is a two thru seven. Weird…maybe a glitch? I dunno… Love your blog and your sweet personality that shines through your writing. Best Wishes
Hmmmm…. That’s really strange. I just checked the link to “one” and it’s working for me. Also, this is what I’m seeing:
My almost-teenager and I decided on a deep green color called Equilibrium. The color is earthy and cozy and is dramatic without being too “in your face.”
Either way–here’s the direct link to the color. Thanks for the heads up!

I had the same problem Susan did so thanks for answering her reply. Love the blog, you’re so creative.
I contacted BEHR about it. Maybe it’s the browser you’re using that’s not compatible with the link they provided. ??? Sorry for the trouble.
i love this color and the way you used those flags. really maximized this corner of the room!

I love the green you chose. I keep saying green is about to have its moment, just as blue has. Seeing as these two colors are my favorite, I couldn’t be happier. I bet your son loves being in his “new” room. We just painted my 13 year old daughters room a deep deep brown. Her choice. She loves it and spends way more time in there now, which is great and sad.
That paint color is awesome!! Great choice.
Great look and use of the space as well! Love the links, too.
It took me a minute to figure out what room this was, I think the wall is different, and no mauve carpet! But from the view looking out, that’s definitely my old room! Looks great!
Yes! That’s it. We had a small closet built out during the renovation so that I could have a laundry room. :)
Beautiful Emily!!
He looks so happy with his new room.
xoxo,
Melissa
That color is gorgeous!
What I great work space for a soon-to-be teenager. Love what you did with the bulletin board too.
What “a” great work space… :)
Constellation – on my exterior shutters :) looking to brighten up the outside before the cold weather comes
This looks fantastic! As a mom of a teenage boy, I love this post! :)
It looks great! Would you mind doing a blog post about the new carpet you chose for your upstairs bedrooms? We have two kids and our upstairs carpet is in sad shape and in need of replacement. I thought you might have some good info to share since you just went through the process!
The bottom left flag is the Colombian flag, and you hung it upside-down. I’m sure that was a design decision, but as someone who grew up in Colombia, it just looks wrong.
Thanks for at least considering to fix it. ;)
So I’ve heard. . . I would offer to change it but he’s already done a little rearranging to this wall ;)
I would choose Casual Day for my son’s bedroom. I am slowly working on “de-yellowing” my walls room by room from our awful builder beige. Your son’s room looks great!
Yeah, they grow so fast! This new (cozy) space looks awesome! It turned out perfect, and he seems to be enjoying it a lot, lol.
Quiet time for my den!
Your comment about whether you’ll ever see him again made me laugh out loud. My oldest is 13 too and she finally has her own room that she doesn’t have to share with her sister. She literally gets home from school, walks upstairs to her bedroom, and we never see her again until we go up and drag her downstairs for dinner! While it’s nice to have some quiet time, I do so miss those days when the kids were toddlers and never wanted to leave my side :(
The room looks great! Love the wall color & flags!
