When You Need More Texture, Less Color

June 5, 2017

A while back, I got a wild hair that this door might need a color. I’d always thought I’d paint it black, but then I slapped some blue on it and posted it to Instagram. The votes were split. (No surprise there.) Only a few of you said to leave it white, and it clicked with me that maybe color isn’t what I needed after all. (Thanks.) This is  a good example of how color might not always be what’s missing in our homes. Check out the difference that came by adding a textured bamboo shade (and doing a little furniture switcheroo).

I think bamboo shades are a winner for any space. (I just ordered more of these—on sale and with a promo code—this morning.) Here are some other favorite ways to incorporate more texture into your room:

PS—I’m not just teasing you with kitchen pictures. I’m actually working on the post now and hope to have it up later this week. Yay!

Bamboo shades are my jam! I love them in bedrooms layered with linen curtains.

I think it would have been more interesting to see the bamboo shade when everything else was the same. Pretty much everything to the left of the door in the picture is different, which I think is contributing a lot to the look and feel of the whole thing.

I so wish I could use those shades on my windows. I love the look of them. But they don’t give me the light control and privacy that I need in my little fish bowl of a house.

In our bedroom, I had to layer them with blackout curtains which we pull every night. In a former house, we tried ordering the white liners to go behind them and I really thought they looked bunchy and messy…. Wouldn’t recommend.

      Mary,
JCP has some cord free fabric shades – “Dover” is the style name – that I have used to replace some of my bamboo shades. Not as much texture as a bamboo shade, but they work for light and privacy. Best Wishes!

Can I ask, apologies if you’ve already posted about this before but I’m wayyy behind on my blog reading, what is the wallpaper (is it actually wallpaper?) on the wall to the left of the door? Love the texture by the way. Completely agree it is what the space needed!

Yes, it’s wallpaper. I used the peel and stick kind:

I think the combination of the bamboo shade and the lighter, more open table by the door made a big difference. Always love your style. I am looking to order those kind of blinds for the family room redo we just finished. The texture will be a good addition.

I love the bamboo shade. How did you install it on the door? I purchased two (and bought blackout liner and added behind to of course make them blackout for a bedroom) bamboo shades and had to attach them with two l brackets to the inside casing. Did you DIY them to attach to a door? Love your blog.

    Thanks!

I agree, the texture update adds so much! I love bamboo shades in pictures, but I’ve always just been too afraid to put them in my own home for some reason. I fear it looking too “cheap” as I don’t know much about how to judge quality! Any pointers?!

I don’t think the thicker bamboo shades like I have in this house look cheap at all. I did put up the thinner matchstick shades in one of our other houses and didn’t love the look of them as much…

Love that console there and that basket underneath is gorgeous. The roman shade and white door keep things so light and airy. I also love that the solution is sometimes NOT doing something like painting the door.

Love the bamboo shades and the added texture! I recently purchased bamboo shades from another source and when they arrived they had quite a bit of a green tint to them which was not what I wanted. Do you feel like these have a green tint at all?

No, these are definitely a golden tone. No greens.

Ive been following for awhile and LOVE your creative insight to change things around and make such pretty spaces! I was just wondering: are those two gold frames, the same ones from Michael’s that used to be on the black & white striped entry wall? I’m in desperate need of multiple large frames for a dramatic entry hallway (much like your new kitchen gallery wall, WOW!). Thanks!
