Snapshots Around Our House

May 11, 2017

I feel like half of our house is really coming along, and the other half is completely turned upside down. We are currently three weeks into an overhaul of the upstairs, including a bathroom renovation. I walked through the house snapping pictures to give you a glimpse of the good—and the stuff that eventually will be…

FullSizeRender 17

I changed out the chest that was by the back door for a lighter console table.

FullSizeRender 5

I’m in the process of framing lots of botanicals (from this book) for our powder room.

FullSizeRender 16

After a long search, I finally found a pair of lamps for our living room at Homegoods.

FullSizeRender 14

Small changes to our bed. These pillows have been in every room in our house.

IMG_3419

Choosing a paint color for our side door. Thanks to the feedback on Instagram, I think I’m sold on blue.

FullSizeRender 11

Adding more framed pictures around our house. (I found the lamp also at Homegoods.)

FullSizeRender 23

Meanwhile, the other side of my “office” is wrecked. I cleaned out our attic and brought down a bunch of things that haven’t found a place just yet.

FullSizeRender 12

Experimenting with pattern here. Not sure this rug is staying in this spot…

FullSizeRender 19

On to the upstairs. . . These will be the entrances to the girls’ and boys’ baths.

FullSizeRender 20

Don’t be sad but we’re getting rid of all of the carpet—yes, even the mauve.

FullSizeRender 18

Behold my new laundry room (which was previously a closet). I requested a pocket door—with a lock. ;)

FullSizeRender 24

I’m having a vanity built for the boys—and am 97% sure I love this paper.

FullSizeRender 22

Outside, I added a lemon tree. We’ll see what happens! (My Home Depot has them for $44.) We also changed out the light.

Love your decorating style, Emily! How you do all of it, though, with five kids amazes me! Oh, I just ordered the botanical book you featured. It was exactly what I was looking for and just “one click”!

Barbara, when I read your comment, something just hit me that I linked to the wrong book! :( I’m so sorry. They’re from the “botanicum” book here: http://bit.ly/2q9gtop. I linked to the animal one in the series by mistake. I think you should be able to cancel your Amazon order within same day… (Link is correct now, btw.)

See, in answer to your question, I don’t do it all. Or at least not very well ;)

Everything looks great! I love seeing glimpses of life in progress. Just a tip, we painted our back door a dark navy, almost black. Loved it! But the full summer sun turned it into a blazing hot surface when the kids were out playing, sometimes too hot to touch the knob to get in! :)

Love what you’ve done so far, and it certainly gives me hope in the light at the end of the tunnel! We just bought our house in November and I feel like it’s never going to come together. You’ve also inspired me to get more framed pictures – I have NONE, not even one from our wedding in our house! EEK!

I was wondering if you could suggest a place to look for blue and white planters like you have sprinkled throughout? They’re beautiful, and I want to do something like that as a centerpiece for my dining table. Everything is so incredibly beautiful!

My best finds have been from thrift stores. I also occasionally see blue and white pieces at HomeGoods and Ross–and Etsy is a good source.

You might like to add a solar tube to your laundry. We have them in three areas that don’t have windows and LOVE them. You will love having the laundry near the bedrooms.

Isn’t it fun to give your house some fluffing every now and then. We put hardwoods in our upstairs several years ago. I don’t miss the carpet at all! I am also redoing my very used playroom for my grandchildren. I loved how yours turned out!

Thank Emily! Do you ever offer design services? I have so many nooks and crannies that I cannot figure out. I love design, but am stuck and afraid to take the next step. If you are interested in a project please let me know. (Because I am sure you aren’t busy at all with 5 kids and what looks like a pretty significant renovation:)

Emily- I bought the chinoiserie book you recommended and now want to frame the pages just as you have done! Can you share where you found the gold frames and mats? Is it a custom cut mat like you did for your hallway grid? I love the final look! Much better price point than the oversized version I spotted in an expensive consignment shop this weekend!
