Details on Our Floating Kitchen Shelves

January 31, 2017

Since posting the video last week on how I like to style our open kitchen shelving, I’ve gotten several questions about the shelves themselves. I love the concept of (some) floating shelves for everyday, easy-to-reach dinnerware and glasses. Here are the specifics on how we placed them and how I added an inexpensive touch of gold to tie them in with the rest of our kitchen.

Our contractor built the shelves to our specifications and mounted them with two steel rods that run through each of them. So far, they have managed to withstand the constant slamming of the door that leads to the garage. I listed measurements below and for reference, our ceilings are 8 feet tall. (Also, we used 12×3” subway tiles. More on that later. . .)

To finish them off, I bought L brackets that you can find at your local hardware store and had our contractor apply them to the edges for me. I brushed them with gold paint (I picked up a small pot at Michael’s) to give them a campaign-style look and to tie them in with our hardware and lighting.

The shelves look great. I added the same type of brackets to some plain picture frames to jazz them up a bit.

Beautiful! Are they hard to keep clean? I would be worried about grease and/or stove splatter. (My kids are cooking now…)

I’ll have to get the source from our designer but I don’t remember it being a steal. Ha!

I love this shelving, easy access and neat. I especially love your wall (back splash!). I’m new to your blog so you may have already discussed it, absolutely lovely!

Really a fine way of making the kitchen look cozier. The shelves appear to have been installed really neatly and without those annoying brackets in place. Thanks for sharing!!

I’m not even sure! I told my contractor I wanted white, and he gave me white :)

Hi Emily! Can you tell me the size of the subway tiles used in your backsplash? 3″ or 4″ x 12″?? My husband and I are planning to do herringbone and trying to figure out what our size preference is. Your photos are really helpful because we would have a long span of backsplash between cabinets and counters that is 17″ so seeing the section below the first shelf helps picture how the scale would be. Thanks!
