When I think of (good) masculine design, the same words/images usually come to mind: dark, cozy, comfortable, relaxed. (Sounds a lot like Fall decorating, as well.) I recently discovered the portfolio of designer Sean Anderson, and all of his rooms are a pretty perfect mix of masculine-infused modern meets traditional style. I enjoyed studying his work over the weekend, and it seemed to be the perfect starting point for a list of what elements/accessories you might look for to infuse a cozy (and possibly more manly) vibe into your space.

This was the most beautiful post. I loved every picture! Thank you!!!
Very manly! Reminds me of J. Peterman that Elaine worked for on Seinfield ;) Seriously, I love all of this. Can’t wait to check out his portfolio. I’ve been really into darker spaces lately and I love all of the texture and natural elements. It all has so much interest and depth.
With 4 males inthe house, my style definitely leans this way! Gorgeous photos. Thanks for sharing so many!
Nice post breaking down some of the elements that fit a more manly design. Its so true that some things like leather, iron, wood & nature just work in a space meant to feel slightly more masculine. My husband is an outdoor enthusiast (hunting, fishing, etc.), so his home office reflects these elements, which suit him.
I must love manly decorating because this was my favorite post in a long time. I loved every photo.
Emily, I really enjoyed these tips and photos. Even though we don’t have a man-room, I feel inspired to bring a few more masculine touches into our home for my husband. Thank you for the inspiration. I always enjoy reading your blog.
Excellent post! Thank you for this. I have always tried to keep our family room masculine and these are the elements I have used, but I didn’t know why I chose them. You have helped me understand my decisions.
Beautiful post. Thank you! Do you have any idea where I might find these beautiful large baskets? I have checked most everywhere on-line. I read all of your posts and have followed you for a few years. Keep up the great work. Sincerely, Elizabeth
Loved this post!! I’m such a fan of this style and appreciate how you break it down so well my friend! xoxo
I loved every picture. I’ve always been drawn to dark & moody rooms. But my husband likes light & airy. We’re working on compromise. 😒
Nate Berkus does great masculine spaces also.
Great post! I’ve been working to combine my style with more masculine elements to make my husband happy with the feel of our home. It’s quite tricky! I’m getting ready to paint a moody navy in a newly renovated room. I’m a light and neutral wall color girl, so not gonna lie, I’m nervous. Combined with the white bookcases, leather chair and cream tufted sofa we own already, I think it’s going to come together nicely. This was super helpful Emily and the timing was perfect!
I am totally attracted to all of these rooms…..because of the layering….!
Love all of this, especially since I’m finishing up a teenage boy’s room. Hoping to strike some similar tones with my project.
Thank for putting into words the style points I’ve admired and aimed for all these years but never been able to describe. Very helpful and it will help me do a better job of evaluating what will work for my space.
