Amanda’s bedroom has a lot of beautiful elements, but she emailed me saying that this wall just felt unfinished. Not wanting to take away from the pretty headboard, I came up with a couple of different options for how she might add some finishing touches.
I love the blue and white lamps (of course!), but they feel a little short for bedside lighting. In this case, I would double up on the lighting by keeping the lamps and adding some modern swing-arm sconces. (Love the shape of these; they’re like a piece of art themselves.) As for what to hang over the headboard, I have two ideas:
The first option is to keep things super simple by adding a small sunburst mirror. Adds just a touch of gold to tie in the leopard pillow and only accentuates the curve of the headboard without overpowering.
My other suggestion would be to use the same sconces but to add a set of three framed art pieces above the bed. (The set I found is 8×10 in size and downloadable from an Etsy seller. Inexpensive and easy!) Hanging the art in an arrangement that mimics the shape of the headboard will make it feel a little taller.
Which look do you do like better?

.
I’ve wondered about adding sconces above table lamps. Thanks for showing how it’s done! Looks great… Love the 3 pictures above the headboard. Fab as always!
I love the abstract navy artwork! It really brings in a modern edge to go with the swing arm lamps. Great Mix!! I love this series so much. I love seeing your style translated in other people’s homes!
Man. I normally LOVE what you come up with, but I am not liking either. I think it’s the swing arm lamps. They are two totally different styles and there are lamps on the night stands already :(
I feel the same as Mara on this one. I’m not loving the idea of wall sconces plus lamps. I’m for one or the other. But, I agree with Emily that the lamps are a tad too short for their use. I do, however, prefer the collection of 3 framed prints above the headboard. Good luck! The room is off to a great start:)
I just love sunburst mirrors, so the first option is obviously my favorite. I also really like your give & take column, I’m happy it’s back! :)
Thanks Emily, I love both looks and am so excited to have my room featured! Would have never thought about sconces above the lamps but what a great idea!
So glad you like it! I’ve always liked the layered light look, but it kind of seems to be a “hot or cold” issue. ;)
Love option number two! Fills up the wall better, adding height as well. I hope she sends an “after” shot with the scones and whatever above the bed option she chooses!
And the “layered” light look is perfect!
Not sure Im loving the swing arms above the table lamps. I do love each on their own though. And I love the mix of more modern with the traditional elements she has going on.
I do usually LOVE everything you do, but I really don’t like the swing arm lamps. I love the blue lamps but agree that they are too short. Perhaps she can use the blue ones somewhere else in her home and purchase appropriately scaled lamps for the bedside table. Love the three prints above the bed as well. Hope she sends after pics!
I’m not aware of having seen this layered bedside light look before, it would be interesting to see how it actually looks as my head says ‘why have both’ but I’m open to the idea if it looks good.
Perfect timing too as I have a headboard that I feel is too short but now instead of replacing it I can add height visually with art or mirrors above.
Love this series. X
I’m not loving the sconces with the table lamps. My solution is larger table lamps with the sunburst mirror over the headboard.
Or skip the table lamps all together & just go wth the sconces. Then I would add the 3 art prints over the headboard.
But what do I know? I had to get your help for my own bedroom.
I seem to be in the minority here, but I really love this look!!! I think the contemporary sconces lend a high-end look to the rest of the traditional decor. To see this done really well, google Jules Ostin’s bedroom in The Intern! So fab ;)
I just saw that movie for the first time a couple of months ago. Maybe that’s what’s planted in my subconscious. :)
Every. Single. Time. I read your blog, I find a take-a-way to use in my home . A few months ago, it was the 8 x 10 Barcelona Pink Area Rug (more beautiful in person and I adore it!). Today it is the DanHobdayArt via Etsy . Holy Moly. There are many fabulous artists on Etsy, I become overwhelmed when searching and give up. You nailed it with this one.
My question — is there a certain paper you generally print on that gives uniform results ? I am new to the digital download art printing world.
Thanks so much, Emily ! I adore you and the blog.
I’m so glad to hear that. Thank you.
I’m the lazy one who sometimes just prints things like this one printer paper but I think a card stock would be a lot better. ;)
I have found asking the artist that you are buying from also can help to choose the right paper.
Love these options for Amanda’s bedroom. It’s nice to have a different eye to help us see what we can do to a space to pull it together.
Love this! I have a curved as well and I think the three prints would look great in my bedroom as well.
Good ideas for both options. So I am just never a fan when a wall color and headboard color are almost the same, which at least from the photo is what it seems. The headboard is beautiful, so make it pop with either a darker wall color or lighter color. That’s my two cents.
