We all know that a big rug is a big purchase. To me, a natural area rug is a great investment because it is just so versatile and go in just about any room. It’s all about adding texture—and of course, so easy to layer with another rug if you crave some color. We bought this jute rug from PB right after we moved into our last house in 2011. After five years, one move, and being lived on by five kids, I can say that it’s still one of our best investments.
I totally missed the sandals under the table until I edited these photos. . .
In fact, if I were to replace it today with a similar style, I’d probably buy the same one. A few disclaimers: it’s starting to show some rub spots where I’ve pulled furniture on it over the last several years. And, some of you have told me about experiencing shedding. I personally never noticed excessive shedding, and I think you probably get a fair amount of it most jute fiber rugs. I’ve only had a to trim a few loose pieces in all the time we’ve had it. Also, we don’t have pets, so I have no experience to share there. . .
I love the braided woven look, but it’s also one of the softest jute rugs I found. I don’t think anything about walking on it barefoot. And, as far as durability with kids goes, you can’t beat it. We have eaten and spilled, and you can see nothing. (I just brush vacuum as normal.)
See another “long-term love” piece I wrote about here.
What would you include on your long-term love list?
.
Emily…because of your original write-up about your PB jute rug, we have purchased them for practically every room in our house. We have two large dogs and sometimes messy adults, but no matter what has ended up on them, I have been able to get it up with no staining. And they are truly soft. Some are layered with cowhides, so you can add as much color or texture as you want to your room. Thank you for your recommendation!!!
Awesome! Glad it worked out for you :)
Cheryl – Does the rug get caught in the dog’s claws? Leaving tufts? Am considering buying, but have two labs who also share our family room :)
-Trish
Is this a wool & jute or chenille & jute rug?
Chenille jute.
I’ve been in love with your rug for a long time now. We are in the process of moving to a new house and I’m thinking it will be time to add this rug to my own home. Question is, how do I decide what size to get? Thanks!
Just for reference, we have the 9×12 in our room, but here’s a post I wrote that might help:

We have this rug, about 3 yrs now, and while I do love the look and softness, with pets the wear and tear is already showing. Sadly too, because its natural fiber you really can’t do a deep cleaning on it (something I like do to at least one a year with a steamer). Would love to find a good alternative that has the same softness. please share if others have found it! This one will likely get demoted to another room where the animals are not as frequent slumbers:)
Ava – I use seagrass rugs in my house. While not as soft, you do get used to the texture (unless you sit on the rug). I have dogs and cats and the rugs don’t show any signs of wear. Spills disappear (with a good blotting) and it vacuums well. I’ve used hydrogen peroxide to disinfect and it didn’t discolor the rug. I also use indoor/outdoor rugs (I like Dash and Albert) and hose them off as needed. Hope this helps : )
We bought the same rug 2 years ago and with 4 kids love it the same. I would love to hear how your white IKEA couches are holding up!
Still loving the Ektorp sofas but definitely not washing the slipcovers as much as I should be ;)
This post is incredibly well timed for me! I’ve been looking for rugs all morning. We currently have PB’s Owen jute rug (now discontinued). We bought it 3 years ago and have loved it. Suddenly it is falling apart. Like, a massively thread bare 2’x2′ hole where I can see the pad below! I went into PB to look at this chenille one and when I spoke to the associated they told me they are only designed to last 2-3 years!!! He wasn’t at all surprised mine was falling apart and that the chenille wouldn’t last very long either. What?! Despite that, I still think I might try it out. Yours still looks gorgeous!
I had this exact rug for several years. It shed like nobody’s business. It was SO BAD!! I loved the way it looked but the massive amounts of fibers all around my house were more than I could handle. I finally decided to get on PB’s website and write a review about how disappointed I was with it due to the shedding. PB contacted me by email, apologized, and offered a full refund by means of a merchandise card. I gladly accepted:-)Now that’s customer service! And that was after several years of owning the rug!!
Same here on the shedding. I bought it after Emily’s original post. Still love the look, don’t get me wrong! But when children sit on the floor, their pants are always covered in what I call rug hair.
It’s weird how some seem to shed more than others. A bad batch?? :)
I have a sea grass rug in my living room. It practically eats dirt but it’s not soft to walk on. And the nuetral colored binding has gotten really dingy/dirty looking. Maybe I need to replace it with a jute rug.
I just looked at my receipt, and sure enough, I just bought the same rug a few weeks ago. Had it delivered to the store saved a few pennies. Can’t wait to put it down in the house this weekend, hopefully.
I bought this rug after your initial post about it. While I love the look and softness of it, I’ve had to move it to my three season porch and layer an old Persian over the top of it because it sheds like crazy! My grandkids would have the fiber all over their clothes and on their hands! It was awful and made a huge mess on my hardwoods. Wish mine didn’t shed like yours! I tried to see if it could be returned to Pottery Barn but it was past 90 days so I was stuck with it.
Same here. Did you see the post above? Beth got a full refund on a merchandise credit even after several years!
This is so timely! I’ve been considering replacing our family room rug with either PB’s jute chenille or jute wool. Do you mind me asking what made you decide the jute chenille versus the jute wool version?
I went to the store and walked on everything. I thought this was the softest one.
Hi! Love your pretty room and your blog! Please share the dreamy blue paint color on the walls.
Thank you!
Hi Dana, It’s Palace Pearl by Benjamin Moore.
I bought this rug about two years ago and it has not held up well at all. It is in our living room which gets quite a bit of traffic from my six kids, dog and cat. Yes, it hides grunge, but it has several worn down spots. And if any pillows fall on the floor, which happens all the time, they are covered in the small fibers.
I purchased this rug based on your recommendation and love it! Stood up to pets, Grandchildren and my spills. Great purchase and would replace with same rug.
I bought this same rug on your recommendation & I love it, too! I agree that it’s very soft & durable. Mine shed some but not terribly. I’ve had it for two years now. Thanks for suggesting a great rug.
Hi Emily! I love this topic of long-term love items in our homes. I’d love to read more about this in the future.
Two of my long-term love items that immediately came to mind – my leather rectangular ottoman from Pottery Barn (we use it as a coffee table) and an awesome leather couch we bought on clearance from Crate & Barrel. They are both 10+ years old and have lived in 2 or 3 homes – funny how both pieces are leather.
I also purchased this same PB rug based on your post – it’s a great choice for our large sunroom. I’m having the shedding issue too but we can deal with it because my kids are older and we don’t really sit on the rug. In fact, based on another suggestion from you – the rug is under two slipcovered Ektorp sofas that face each other, so they provide plenty of seating. My home has your design ‘stamp’ all over it! :)
Good to hear :)
I love this rug! We are rug shopping for our house right now, and I think this would be beautiful for our dining room. Also, outdoors – do you think this quality would be good for a screened porch?
I’ve enjoyed catching up on your blog! Thanks for the ideas!
Anna
I think it would work for a covered space, although I’m not sure it’s necessarily made for outdoors. I’ve thought about moving ours to our screened porch and buying a new one for our living room some day…
Everyone is focused on the rug and I can’t get over your black sandals! I know it’s a little late in the season for sandal wearing but can you tell me who makes them? Thanks so much!
Well, thanks for noticing :) I ordered them from J. Crew Factory earlier this summer.
Long term loves include my Ikea Hemnes dressers in antique brown stain. I could never have imagined Ikea pieces could last for 13 years and 2 moves but they truly look as good as ever. Timeless rustic brown stain, clean lines, not ornate, and sturdy workhorses. I did pay to have someone professionally assemble them at the time (I didn’t have two dressers in me) and that could have been the trick! My other long term loves are RH silver urn lamps, man were they pricey 10 years ago as a newlywed but they are truly beautiful and timeless. I am sure I will keep them forever!
Well, when you buy a jute carpet it’s a long-term relationship :). I’m happy I decided on Persian carpet instead (thank you Doris Leslie Blau!)
