So, how do you give a small entryway (with few walls) some personality? Jenny sent me pictures of her foyer, which already has a great light and a pretty rug.
Nothing! I love what she has to work with and think this space just needs some accessorizing.
Since it’s a pretty open entryway, I’d make it more defined by using a (removable) patterned wallpaper on the one wall around the door. It’s graphic without being too loud. A simple wall sconce would add some mood lighting at night without the bulk of a lamp. (The wallpaper print will keep things from feeling too asymmetrical.) I’d also add a few colorful accessories to break up the wood tones of the door and table.
wallpaper // sconce // stool // rug (similar) // lighting (similar) // boxwood // bowl
Looking for more small entry styling ideas? I wrote another post here.
And, I thought you might like to see a quick update on a past “give & take” post. . . Remember Mary’s bedroom (that was already beautiful)? She took my suggestions and added more shelving and wall lamps and reupholstered her yellow chair. I love it!

This is great, Emily! Love your perspective. I’ll make sure I follow up with an after photo. I did add a pumpkin and books to the table this weekend, so that’s a start. :)
love the ideas! we have a similar entryway (minus that GORGEOUS door!! love it!) that i’m trying to decorate. thanks for the inspiration.
What was your reasoning for not putting the table and accessories on the other side of the door? It seems like there is a little more wall room there and room for a small mirror over the table. Love all your choices! Just trying to understand perspectives a little more to help me branch out from what I perceive. Your blog is one of my favorites and I have learned so much from you. Thank you.
Hi Diana–I wouldn’t want the door to open into the table/accessories.
This was a nice surprise! Thanks again for all your help. I love my new & improved room.
Jenny’s entry is going to be so cute if she follows your advice. I hope she sends in “after” pictures.
Love reading your blog! I really loved that bedroom!
Thanks so much for doing these Give & Takes, Emily! It’s so helpful to see your perspective.
Love your ideas here! So fun to see your thought process and how to take spaces to the next level!
Do you know where Mary got the extra long floating shelf? I have been looking for one thats at least 6 feet!
Would it be super weird if you asked her what her entry wall color is?
Im on the prowl and well…this is such a beautiful neutral:-)
Thanks for all you do Emily. Loved the blog for years, and you inspire with every post!

Emily! I’m so sending you picks of my living room. I’ve moved it around so much and acquired a new couch, that I’ve lost track of what I was trying to do in there. *sigh*
Rachel – if you’re reading, our entry is painted Classic Gray by BM. Hope that helps!
