Decorating Under/Around Our TV

July 20, 2016 9 Comments

After I posted this shot on Instagram, a few of you asked for more pictures of how I’ve decorated around our TV. I had been insisting that our television needed to be mounted on the wall for a while now, and as usual, I was right. ;) Not only can we see it better, but I can stick a few pretties on the console. (More on that piece here.)

I kept everything low on the top, and stuffed the bottom full of books to disguise the cords.

I know there’s always that question of what to put above or around the TV wall. I chose nothing since we have 8’ ceilings. Sometimes, less is more. . . (I did the exact opposite of this in our last house, if you’d like to see another example.)

I like this so much more than over the fireplace. We have just put a contract on a house on a lake and it has a huge great room with two walls of windows. I am stumped as to how to arrange that room since I do not want to block a single inch of the awesome lake view.

I can make you a custom faux book box that hides these cords (and internet routers) and makes a statement on the shelf-no stuffing required!

Cute idea–especially for an office. Our remote has to be able to “see” the box, though. :)

If you want to hide your cable box etc inside something else, you could use an infrared receiver on your TV. We went with wall- mounting as well and love it too!

Do your twins leave the fragile stuff alone? I have a 20 month old and everything nice is up high.

They do, but they’re four now. I’m not a big believer in putting everything away. I’ve just never made a huge deal of it, and they’ve not been terribly interested. (Not they never touch things but luckily, I don’t have anything that nice!)

I was most interested in your reply here too. My 16 month old has loved to take things apart since he was old enough to crawl. I have been keeping things out (like books on lower shelves) but he insists on spreading everything out on the ground. Luckily not serious damage by any means but it doesn’t help me with keeping things organized/pretty enough for hosting anything more formal than a play date. Even things put away in cute storage boxes he gets into!

I dream of the day I can leave something nice on the coffee table. My oldest is 5 and leaves everything alone now but she was the same way.

I just finished painting a larger dresser than what I’m currently using under our wall-mounted TV. That means more surface area to display some things I’ve collected. I don’t have anything on the wall around the TV. And I’m OK with it.
