Our Kitchen Reno: What’s Left

Jun82016

Although I’ve been posting photos of our kitchen on Instagram, it’s been a while since I’ve given you a renovation update here. We’ve been in and using the new kitchen for the last several weeks, and it’s been wonderful!  Knocking a wall out to make the front room and existing kitchen area one big space has been the best thing we’ve done to our house so far. I’m also loving having a long island with five barstools (counter height, actually). I can literally stand and serve the food, then scoop it back up and clean their plates—all in one spot.

I know you might be waiting for a big reveal, but that post (good pictures, a full source list, etc.) may not come for a while longer. We’re doing this thing in real-life time, which means the little things I need to finish up will have to happen between Summer break, ballgames, and meals. Eating in and using the kitchen take precedence over decorating it sometimes. :) I do promise to post more updates in the meantime, though. . .

For those of you’ve asked me about the countertops or appliances or anything else, I’ll fill you in on that later, too. Three weeks isn’t a huge amount of time to be able to give you accurate feedback. But, I am happy with the honed granite so far. Give me a little time, and I’ll give you a better assessment.

So, what’s actually left? Our hood will (obviously) go where you see the big hole over the stove (see first image) and may get here next week. We’re also waiting on chairs, I’m still shopping for a dining bench, and I plan to paint the door and hang some pictures. For now, I’m just happy to be eating at home again.

Without a doubt that first picture melted my heart! The love and adoration is palpable. Oh, and the kitchen isn’t too shabby either.

Thanks for the update. We’re wading through a simple project, adding a gas fireplace with builtins for our home we’re moving into next week in SC (leaving Williamsburg, Va to be closer to kids and grands!). It was proposed to take 4-5 weeks but we’re still waiting for completion at week 13! Small projects by home builders just don’t get the attention of bigger ones, I guess. But, in the long run, it’ll be so worth it, as will your wonderful new kitchen! Sweet peek today into it–good choices over there!

Having your kitchen back has to be just the best thing ever. Pat yourself on the back for getting through your renovation.

Looks great! I’m doing mine in real time also which is why we’re over a year now! Money and time are two things that escape me. I did get the herringbone pattern almost done though! And taking out the wall may have to be phase 2 but little by little.

I’m SOOO happy to hear that you are liking your honed granite!! I’m one of the pesky people who asked about that. Our Absolute Black honed granite is being installed in 9 days. I’m excited but very nervous because I am hearing very mixed reviews! I like the sort of charcoal, almost chalky look of it, and I’ve been told that I must seal it with the regular sealer without enhancer to keep that look, but some people say it “stains” really bad and shows the oils from your fingerprints every time you touch it! I’ve also heard that if it’s sealed with an enhancer sealer, you will have fewer problems with fingerprints and “stains” but it will have a wet look, which isn’t really what I was going for. So, I am very anxious to hear what it’s been like living with your honed granite and any advice you or any of your readers have about sealer with enhancer vs. no enhancer, etc.

Where did you get the gold drawer handles? Those are to die for! I’ve looked everywhere for gold ones like that and I have not found any!

Hi Emily! I have been following your blog for a few years now. Love it! Like you I also have 5 kids, twins at the end. Mine are all grown now. What a joy and a privilege it was to raise them! I love your new kitchen! The green color is beautiful. I was wondering what brand the gold cabinet pulls are and where you purchased them. I have been unable to find many gold choices. Thanks!!

        You’re my mom twin :)

I’ll check on the source and include in the kitchen post. We ordered them through our kitchen designer.

I love your choices for your kichen, but what I love most about your post is the sweet picture of your son and daughter. The precious face of your daughter ‘s smile and her sweet little hands. It brings me back to when my daughter was small. I miss those days

About the hardware. . . I ordered them through our designer so I’d have to do a little research. I’ll try to pull together a comprehensive source list for the final post. Thanks for your patience.

Have you named the “style” of cabinets? I cannot seem to find the name of these, but I keep seeing similar ones!

Hi – I LOVE your kitchen!! I’m new to your blog (my MIL just turned me onto your Insta thank goodness :)), so forgive me if this has been posted and I have missed it. Can you tell me where your subway tile came from, or what size it is? Thanks!

Did u do the standard 3″ pulls on all your drawers. They look much bigger in the picture. Also, I’d love to know where u got them from.
