Finally, I can show you pictures of how the Spring makeover I did with Lowe’s Home Improvement turned out! You may remember a few months ago, I asked readers to submit any spaces that were in need of a refresh and from hundreds of applicants, one was selected. In April, my assistant Katie and I traveled to Utah to create a colorful outdoor space for Jamie, a special education teacher, her husband and their three kids.
Jamie’s family has lived in their Utah home for several years, but have yet to enjoy a Summer on their patio. Due to her younger son’s medical condition that has required multiple surgeries, her family has spent the last couple of summers in Florida to be near his doctor. I am happy to report he’s doing great, and they’ll finally be able to enjoy their outside space together. (She told me they just hosted her oldest son’s graduation party on the patio yesterday.)
Remember where we started?
And now:
Another before (and one of the photos Jamie submitted with her application for the makeover). . .
(Notice I pulled the same built-in grill trick that I posted about here.)
Jamie and her family were a joy to work with; they were up for anything! Before we arrived, I gave her very few clues about the direction we were going for the makeover, which was a lot of fun. The overall color scheme is red and shades of blue, but the chartreuse door adds a little bit of unexpected color. We also repainted the door trim and railings a glossy black:
Since her patio is so long, I wanted to create several seating areas. (She often hosts her extended family for dinner.) We were able to give her a conversation area with four comfy chairs, a dining area and another small bistro table by the grill. A rug and potted trees are a great way to break up the different spaces visually.
We were lucky that she already had a big pergola in place. The team of Lowe’s volunteers helped us hang the string lights—perfect for extra lighting since there is only the one lantern pendant that we changed out by the door.
The painted concrete steps were the last project of the day. (Tutorial coming in another post soon.)

A huge thanks to Lindsay Salazar Photography for capturing such beautiful images.

I am in LOVE!!! It turned out great. Very welcoming
This is beautiful. This might be a silly request – but can you tell me where the lights are plugged in? Did you conceal it someone how?
She had an outlet close to the steps. We ran a brown extension cord up into the grapevine and plugged them in near the top.
It’s absolutely beautiful, I love it!
It’s perfect! The difference is like night & day. I’m happy that such a deserving family now has the opportunity to relax in such a pretty space.
My patio could use some sprucing up. I may have to copy some of your ideas.
So beautiful and so efficient–a win/win! great for gatherings but especially grand for a family to relax in everyday. when I look at this space, I smile. the word, “joy,” floats!
:)
Question, is the light fixture the 18 inch size or the 14 inch? I have the hardest time estimating what size will look best!! Thank you Emily!
The bigger size.
Well done! As usual, you knocked it out of the park. I hope I haven’t missed it (guess I should go check your blog), but I’m anxious to see your kitchen reveal!
No big reveal post. Just updates along the way :)
Thank you for doing this for this amazing family! Jamie taught my special needs daughter in preschool and made a HUGE impact in not only her life, but mine as well (I also taught at the preschool right next door to Jamie’s classroom). Such a beautiful patio, I just love it and I know Jamie and her family do too! I bet you had a blast with Jamie and her wit!
Yes, we did! Jamie is a gem :)
Way to make me cry! I love that sweet girl of yours. I’ll have you guys over for a lunch date on the patio this summer!
Lindsay did an awesome job capturing the beauty of this space. We had a wonderful graduation party last night and as I type this my daughter is hosting an end of year party for some friends. The patio is more than perfect! Thank you so much!
Did you do any type of treatment to the concrete patio? I have a patio in need of some tlc. If so, I would love to know the details.
Beautiful work Emily! I love the mix of seating areas, especially your choice to go with four chairs instead of a sofa.
It looks great! Such a transformation. I love the separate spaces for dining and lounging.
Can you tell me what method was used to spruce up the concrete? Maybe I missed it on a previous post. Thank you.
We only painted the stairs–another post coming soon. Nothing was done to the other concrete other than God washing it for us the day of the photoshoot :)
What a transformation! Looks like alot of cleanup and prep too–way to go Lowe’s volunteers.
Jamie, hope you and your family enjoy it for a long time.
A beautiful makeover that others can achieve, Emily. I like the neutrals with pops of red and blue.
What a fun makeover! Sounds like Jamie and her family truly deserved such a gift. The steps are so much fun…and I love the blue chairs, too. Am I the only one who feels like most outdoor chairs are bulky and ugly?
Oh my goodness I am swooning over how gorgeous this space is!! Thanks for sharing it at the Outdoor Extravaganza party -you are top of my list to feature!
Thank you, Krista!
Thanks for sharing Emily, that’s very impressive! Congratulations for your Blogger awards :)
