The Twins’ (Boy/Girl) Bedroom

April 20, 2016

It’s been a while since I’ve taken pictures of the twins’ bedroom for the blog. (Mainly, because you usually have to wade through toys and clothes to even get to the beds.) While it was cleaned up—for a minute—I thought I’d show you how it’s coming along. . .

Raleigh green bedroom

I loved the green I used in their last room so much that I painted it the exact same color. I also reused the framed pages from this favorite book, and since I already had the pillows, a plan for a boy/girl shared room was born.

I really lucked out with the furniture for their room. I found the beds at a yard sale in our neighborhood for $35 a piece, and bought a faux bamboo set from Craigslist that included a desk and two chest of drawers. Even the little wicker stool was a thrift store find.

And, my latest addition—and the thing that I think really finishes the room—is a big area rug. The rug is by Mohawk Home at Kohl’s. (Did you even know that Kohl’s carried Mohawk rugs??) They approached me about using one in our home, and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of great ones they have online.

The pattern on the floor is what was missing—and is helpful in covering up carpet I eventually want to replace. They do actually play trains and puzzles (and wrestling) in their floor, and it’s just plush enough for all of that. :)

Love this room! I am convinced that the book I have of these prints is a different size as I cannot for the life of me find frames to fit them….what size are your frames??

    Thanks!

I had to trim the pages down a little. I think maybe 11×14 or something close to that. Can confirm when they wake up :)

I love the green. It is a historical color for your traditional colonial, but the way you have styled it and THAT RUG! really make it modern and fresh. the slope in the ceiling makes that room feel cozy and special like a little hideout too.

Oh I love this Emily. The rug looks fantastic in there. And I am in the same situation with trying to cover up my carpet until we replace it. What a darling room. Lucky S & A!

Beautiful! One question – are those flat sheets that you used as bedskirts?? Please say yes because I love the idea!

I love this room. It’s the kind of room kids can curl up and read a book in or sit by the window and daydream. They can be as cozy as they like. It’s very sweet and it’s great you were able to reuse some things from around your house.

This looks great! I agree with the others who said it’s a very mature space. How many bedrooms does this house have? Are your older girls sharing a room?

Love the colour, it would be great in a library or dining room. That desk is adorable and the beds such a bargain. Really lovely all round.
I had a couple of green bedrooms when I was younger, I find them restful. My mum made me green velvet curtains and a matching window seat cushion which I loved.

I’m sure you’re gonna say a yard sale (and I will cry), but WHERE did you find that train painting?! My son is a serious train fanatic and it would be so perfect for him.

    Excellent job, as always!

I love this room! I’m looking for boy/girl inspiration for my kids as we’re moving soon…
Question, your kids are a few years older than mine (my boy is 4.5, girl is 2.5) when do you think they’ll move into rooms of their own? When do you think you’ll need to separate them by gender?

Per usual, beautiful work Emily! I love the green…it’s a good one. I was just thinking how I appreciate that 1. There’s color. It’s not another black & white & grey/greige room….which I like a lot, but I love color more and 2. It’s not your typical themed room, which I think you’re great at….then I rembered somewhere in your house is a Frozen bed :) And it just made me happy and reminded me why I’m such a fan!

We were JUST looking at those very wall sconces last night! We’re re-doing our 15 year-old son’s bedroom as a surprise this weekend while he’s gone. Seeing them here in your post just seals the deal for me. Those are the ones we’re getting!

Wonderful room! Just a tip: The animalium book also comes in a specific poster book, that has 26 full page posters. Some in the regular book is on two pages and not that good for framing😊

I LOVE this space! So sweet! How thick is the pile of the rug? (I checked the Kohl’s website and the rug is still available – yay! – but there isn’t much detail on the specs.) Is it a flatweave or does it have a bit of a pile to it? Do you find it to be soft enough for a kids’ space?

Hi–I’ve changed the room since then and no longer have the rug but it did have a bit of a pile to it. Very nice but I put a darker, more patterned rug in the space when I changed it up :)
