You may only think about decorating with red, white and blue in the middle of Summer, but check out this sweet cottage featured in last month’s Country Living. It’s a perfect example of how this classic color combination can work—when done in the right doses. And, maybe it will bring inspiration for some of you who are “red people” or “blue people” and don’t think you can bring another color into the mix. . .
The magic formula.
While white is the dominant color, look closely, and you’ll see touches of red and blue in almost every room. I also love that they took one (very small) room to saturate in deep blue—and added a vintage flag. The homeowners layered on the texture with bamboo shades, seagrass baskets, antique furniture pieces in warm wood tones, and used a little bit of black in every space. This home also reminds me to keep an eye out for pretty gold mirrors. . . (They don’t have to match to work on the same wall!)
Get the look.
So, how do you create a similar look without your home feeling like the Fourth of July? Here are a few accessory (and paint) ideas to try:
mirror // baskets // red toile pillow // fiddle leaf fig tree // blue & white jar //
blue & white pillow // blue paint // white paint // framed flag // chandelier // rug

I thought that was the cutest kitchen and porch!
I’m always hesitant to put black with navy, but this has confirmed that it’s okay.
Love this cottage. So fresh and charming! The little blue room with the American flag reminds me a bit of Nathan Turner. He loves to use red white and blue in decorating and does it beautifully!
thank you so much emily. what an honor that you like my little house. i’ve always been an admirer of yours so this is quite thrilling. :) x
Well, that’s thrilling for me, as well :) Love your style and am so happy to have now discovered your blog. Will be following along!
Janet, the homeowner, writes the most lovely blog. A real breath of fresh air, and beautiful photos besides.
I love this look. It feels so fresh & summery. For your next post maybe explain how to warm it up for Fall & Winter. Just a thought.
So cute!
I came across this home in Country Living — it is gorgeous. I have an entire post sitting in my draft just inspired by that porch :)
