Updating Our Outdoor Lighting

March 3, 2016

From the first time I laid eyes on our house, I was pretty smitten. It was different than any home we’ve ever lived in, and I’ve just always loved a classic black and white colonial (thanks in large part to Father of the Bride, which I’ve mentioned before). So, there’s not a lot of updates we’re making to the exterior. I do think, however, that updating your outdoor lighting is like an instant face lift, if you have an older home.

Colonial front door

I felt like the original fixture was a little small for the porch. I wanted something with more bulk that still kept in the classic style of the exterior. Del Mar Fans & Lighting approached me about working together on a project around our house, and it took me all of about two minutes to find this Hinkley outdoor black ceiling light:

It’s the Sullivan lantern by Hinkley Lighting, and I like that it’s a fresh version of a traditional style.

I actually love this whole collection and hope to eventually add the coordinating Sullivan sconces by Hinkley at Del Mar once we start working on the back of the house.

Good news for any of you who might be in the market for a similar light. Del Mar is giving away the same exact pendant on their Facebook page, starting tomorrow (Mar. 4th). Be sure to “like them” and sign up to participate in the giveaway.

Instant upgrade, Emily! The previous light was definitely too small. Love your planters, too :)

That light would match our style of home as well! I will enter that giveaway for sure. Our town needs a Lowe’s–closest one two hours away. I wish they would style their goods more and create “rooms.” Rather than just rows and rows of merchandise. The store we go to is this way, more like Home Depot, but the merchandise at Lowe’s is quite a step up in quality. just saying . . . .

Love the new light! I agree that the scale is much better. I also love your planters. Do you mind sharing where you purchased them? Thanks!

Thank you, Kelly. I’m pretty sure they were from Lowe’s a couple of years ago.

I love your pretty porch. I recently moved into a house with a pretty porch which brings me back to days of growing up in a home with a porch. My question is how you keep the birds from building nest on those little nooks that jut out from the top of the post? I love birds but I do not like the mess they make. I moved to north Georgia from the Dallas area and it Texas they loved building nests on my little porch in Texas. I tried painting the ceiling blue. That really did not work well. Any advise would be welcomed.

I love the lift new lighting gives to a space. Nice job, Emily.

I love this light and the way the portico really features it. We have a very similar situation (colonial house with a portico) and would like to try a lantern such as this. Have you had any trouble with the light swinging (and possibly getting damaged?) during a wind storm?
