Our Black Room (Before It’s Too Late)

March 9, 2016

The work on our kitchen renovation (finally!) starts next week, so I took some pictures of our not-quite-finished front living/sitting/piano room before the walls come down. I painted the walls Little Black Dress (by Clark + Kensington) and used furniture and art that I already had to create a little place to work and read.

Once the renovation starts, the piano will move into what is currently the dining room. The bookcase and chairs are going upstairs for now.

That’s such a beautiful color, I’m anxious to do a dark room one of these days! I’m sure they’ll be “out” though by the time I get around to it. ;) Can’t wait to follow the kitchen reno!

The paint color looks so good in there; nice to see it before it changes! I always wonder if I could pull something like that off in my own house… I feel like all of the rooms I would have enough light in, are rooms like the kitchen where it would be a little harder to work that dark of a color in. I will keep brainstorming though!

This looks GREAT! I love the contrasting colors and textures. Curious though, how does the black feel when it is dark outside? Is it light enough for reading? Or does the white on the ceiling and furniture create some brightness? I’m a fan of the black. I tend to lean towards black accents in my home. Love it!

I don’t feel like it’s gloomy at night. More cozy :)

Did I miss the wallpaper room reveal or do you just tease us with glimpses from time to time ? :)

I love the black walls with wood tones. I have that in my son’s room too and the warm/cool thing gets me every time. Your large scale art project is so inspiring too….I keep looking for huge ugly art at thrift stores so I can do something fun and modern with it like you did here! So exciting about your kitchen renovation starting soon!

I’m just sorry we aren’t neighbors, I’m pretty sure we could shop in each other’s houses when we needed to change things up in our own. I love your style!

I just love the colors in this room! That piano finish is perfect–did you refinish it, or is that just a natural patina?

I found it on Craigslist already like that! I’m not sure I’d have the patience–or know-how.

That is the prettiest gallery wall of family photos I’ve seen and the placement is just brilliantt (love that it carries over the corner). You’ve inspired me! I need more family photos hung in gallery style frames. The dark walls are stunning and compliment the piano so nicely. I’m a pianist so I LOVE seeing pianos in interiors!

I’ve always loved this room. I’ve been a fan of black rooms for years.
Once the wall comes down, what will happen to your chandelier? Will you be able to still use it?

All of our lighting will be moved around, but I’m going to find a place to use it somewhere.

    Hello,
I love the black paint for the backdrop for your piano. Where did you get the gold lamp on the piano in the picture from ‘OUR BLACK ROOM (BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE) Mar 9, 2016’ post? I am looking for lighting for our piano and am having trouble finding a nice fixture. Thank you!

Hi Julie, I found it at an antique store :) This one isn’t exactly the same but I’ve always liked the look of it.
