Hanging Silhouettes Up Our Stairway

February 8, 2016

I’ve always wanted silhouettes of our kids and had envisioned them hanging up the stairway wall from the time we bought the house. I think it’s the perfect way to remember this time in our lives and the first year in this home. (I feel like they might still be hanging there when they’re all grown!)

I ordered them from Minted (more about that here) and had them framed in a simple black style. I thought about going with classic black for the silhouettes, too, but just kept going back to the idea of something brighter. (This house just feels like it wants some color!) I went with “blueberry” for the boys and “lime” for the girls.

(Notice I didn’t hang them in birth order. It would’ve driven me crazy if they weren’t staggered by color.)

Although getting their profile pictures proved to be a task (you would’ve thought I was asking some of them for a kidney instead of a quick picture!), the process of ordering and customizing them through Minted was super easy. I just uploaded iPhone pics of each kid:

I love them so much—especially the names at the bottom and the way they captured even the wispiest little hairs (actually the result of her taking scissors to create her own “bangs”. . . ).

I still have some work to do on our stairs. We’ll eventually pull up the carpet and paint the railing. But, for now, these sweet little heads make the 237 times I run up and down my steps every day a little sweeter.

These would make the best Valentine gifts! I blogged about more custom art ideas here.

PS—Check back tomorrow for a really fun announcement!!

I have always loved silhouettes. I have a couple of my daughter done when she was young.
She just adopted a rescue dog & I want to gift her with a silhouette of new “boy”. Turns out getting a profile pic of a dog is also very difficult.
Thanks for sharing Minted as a good source.

It always amazes me how much detail is picked up in silhouettes!

These are so precious, Emily. I have such vivid memories of sitting for a silhouette when I was young with a bun and bow high up on my head. Back then my dad drew it but this rocks. I should do this before my kids are 21! xo

Hi Emily! Love this and love the simple black frames you chose. Where are they from?

I’ve had it for a few years and it’s still holding up well. I ordered mine from Joss & Main.
