Flower arranging was one of my favorite classes at the Better Homes & Gardens Style Maker workshop I attended last month. It was led by Matthew Robbins, a talented floral designer and BH&G contributing stylist. He taught us how to layer our arrangements with different textures, but also reminded me that kale can be a beautiful addition to even the simplest grocery store bouquet. (Well, it did help that FTD supplied us with a lot of beautiful flowers to work with—but kale would be a great way to fluff up less expensive flowers or even blooms from your yard).
They displayed our creations at the party later that night. (You know, the one where I “met” Brooke.) The above bouquet was designed by my friend Beth. Alright, go put some kale on your grocery list. :)
I would never have thought to add this to a flower arrangement but it really works.
Done! I loved seeing everyone’s beautiful arrangements. Pretty sure Kale will be the star player in my Thanksgiving centerpiece!
Oops! That looks more like ornamental cabbage. Related, but not the same. However, kale leaves are pretty, too.
According to Matthew, it’s a type of kale. . .
Love it! My mom always had cabbage in her outdoor planters come fall and I love it indoors too! Super food and super flower!

One of my favorites! Our local Costco will get bunches of them in during the next month or so, but you have to act quickly before they’re all snatched up. They’re sold in the floral section and look like small cabbages on manageable stems, unlike what you find in the garden centers or produce aisle. I always plant them in my yard, as well. They look beautiful against Dusty Miller and pansies.
I have been wanting to add kale to some grocery store flowers ever since that class! And so fun to see my arrangement…I never could find it that night! I must have been busy with Brooke :)
Kale is more than just a delicious food – it can also be used for decorating. It looks particularly good in floral bouquets. I find that ornamental kale looks particularly good with fall mums.
