Small Pattern On The Sofa

June 29, 2015

I loved this home in the June issue of Better Homes & Gardens, but especially the pattern on this living room sofa:

The owner recovered her couch in this small chevron print, and it has me thinking about possibly doing the same to ours—a $150 Craigslist find that I’ve had for 5+ years. Plus, there are a couple of short people in our house who decided to add a little artwork with ink pens to one of our cushions. . . (And, that’s why I buy Craigslist couches.)

I like the idea of pairing larger patterns on the pillows with a smaller pattern on the sofa:

It reminds me of this fabric—which would be super affordable if you need several yards for reupholstering. (I blogged about more affordable fabric finds here.)

What do you think about a small pattern on a sofa?

I too loved that room (especially the couch!) in BHG. I think you should do it!

I love that idea, really when I see that pattern I don’t so much see a pattern but adding some texture to the room if that makes sense!? I think it would work out great in your house!!

I totally agree that out adds texture, which I am a really big fan of.

Emily, I love this look! I am curious as to how many yards of fabric you are estimating to cover a sofa like yours?

I’m not even there in the process yet :) But, I’ll let you know when/if it happens. Here’s a chart that might help:

I like that idea and did that once when my kids were really young. But when they unloaded the sofa upon delivery I saw it from a distance and said, “Oh my goodness, I’ve bought a white sofa!” Though it had a small print, it read really light and did show wear and often looked dingy despite my cleaning it. So, my take is to only do it on a darker background for practicality’s sake. Otherwise a good idea as the solid sofa is smart but can get boring. :)

I like this idea because it reads as a solid from a distance. I have a print couch that I am so tired of. I enjoyed it for awhile but I can’t change pillows except for solids and it tends to dictate the colors of the room as a whole. The small print does add texture as well. Good idea.

Love that coral-colored one! I’m enjoying seeing your pins. I followed your Pinterest boards, but I seldom take the time to study Pinterest lately. Love seeing your “highlight reel!”

I like the idea since a small pattern reads almost solid from a distance but is more interesting up close! Share an after if you do it!
BTW I got two pottery barn couches for a steal off craigslist and lucky for us they have the upgraded resistant fabric, our kids have done everything they can to destroy them and everything wipes right off! Now I want everything upholstered with it. Worth the money if you are ever shopping for a new couch!

I just chose a small grey & white chevron (like the blue one pictured) for our new sofa–(freaked out for a minute & 2nd guessed myself after it was done)but realized that when its that small it still looks like a neutral and just brings texture into the room. The salesperson thanked me for not choosing beige like everyone else ;)

Love the small print texture with the large scale print pillows! who do you use locally for upholstery? My guy recently shut down and I have ugly chairs that are in desperate need of help!

I’m actually “in between” upholsterers… Do you follow Dwell by Cheryl? I know she uses someone locally that she really likes, but I can’t remember the name right now…

That is such a great idea! My mum actually has a sofa covered in a really small chevron pattern and because of the patterns size it has this timeless look about it!

I think small prints on something that gets loved as much as a sofa is a great idea. It reads more like a texture and will disguise wear better than a solid.

A small patterend sofa sounds great! It would add character and has the potential to refresh the whole room, especially if you’re going for bold cushions.
