I love when my readers come to me with good post ideas. Especially, when it’s one that could potentially turn into a regular series—if you all are up for it, that is. . . Maija suggested that I look at a room and based on my first impression, say what I would add or take away from the space. So, I asked her to be my guinea pig. She sent me this picture of her master bedroom:
>Feels like the room falls “flat”; a little bland overall
>Says the room feels more formal than they actually are
>Concerned lighting may be too big
>Unsure how to pull together mismatched nightstands
Let me preface this by saying there is no right or wrong here—just my first impression of what I might do differently or tweak, if it were my own space. And, although I’m not working with a specific budget or exact measurements, I did pull a few product examples to illustrate what I’m envisioning.
So, I think the biggest thing this room needs is warmth, and I would do that by pulling in more gold. Gold and gray is one of my favorite combos and has such a rich, luxe feel when paired together.
I would also change out some of the more formal elements with some modern, fresh pieces—and a few touches of black:
gold mirror // abstract 1 // abstract 2 // lamp // pillow // bench
Do you have a room in your house that you’d like to have considered for a future “give & take” post? Send me a picture so we can see if it’s a good fit. :)

Ditto! This is a great series. : )
Love this post, Emily. It was fun to look at Maija’s room (not bad to start with, btw!) and think about my own ideas, and then scroll down and see what (better) ideas you had. Would love to see this as a regular feature on your blog. Keep up the good work!
LOVE this idea for a regular series. It gives us an inside look into how that talented decorating mind of yours works. And ditto on the gray & gold – those inspiration images are stunning! I hope Maija takes the advice when she cans, AND SENDS UDPATE PICS so we can see the transformation!!
LOVE this! Will be sending you a picture soon – once I choose which room needs the most help :)

What a great idea! I will look forward to more posts in this series! I know she didn’t ask my advice but I think the duvet and pillow shams look a little formal so I would suggest changing those for a more casual feel!
I love this too. I’m not a designer but have fallen in love with design and before and afters. Before I read your suggestions, I tried to figure out what I would do to address her concerns. Not quite on the mark. Your suggestions are so spot on. Thanks again for giving this non-designer so much reading/learning pleasure.
Love, love, love this! Can’t wait for more!
Excited for the series, feels like it’s gonna be good.
