Decorating with Oriental & Persian Rugs

February 10, 2015

I love the color and pattern an oriental or Persian rug can bring into a space. I bought one for our den and wouldn’t mind to have a couple more throughout the house. I especially like them in more modern spaces. A fun mix of old and new.

Today, I’m on the Everything But the House blog, sharing a few tips for how to decorate with one of these rugs. Their auction site is a great source for rug shopping, offering both local pick-up and shipping options. Here are just a few that are currently up for auction—and several still have really low bids:

I am off to go read how to decorate with these types of rugs. My mom has tried to passed down some of their beautiful oriental rugs but I can’t commit. I feel I would tire of them too easily but they are stunning. Maybe I’ll change my mind one of these days and take her up on the offer.

They’ve really grown on me over time. (I’d take her up on her offer!) :)

I love oriental/Persian/Turkish rugs. They have so much color, pattern, and life, but somehow blend in seamlessly with almost any type of decor. I, too, love them in a modern space. I think concrete floors, white walls, simple furniture, and stunning artwork with a Persian rug is a super chic look. I recently bought a jute/chenille 8X10 area rug from Pottery Barn thinking you can’t go wrong with a simple neutral with some texture, but I am soooo regretting that purchase and wish I had waited for the perfect overdyed Turkish rug on eBay!

All of these rugs are beautiful! I especially love the second to last pic, with that green. That NEEDS to be in my home, now!

I always love these types of rugs but I am loathe to buy them second hand due to an issue with bugs a friend had with a second-hand rug that was supposedly professionally cleaned before they purchased it.

Such PERFECT timing as I am currently obsessed with these rugs! It just occurred to me that painting my walls white and finding one of these amazing rugs will solve all of life’s problems! I keep searching for “Persian rug with modern decor” on Pinterest. LOVE the old/new mix. Thanks for the tips!

It’s funny you posted this because I’ve been on the hunt this winter for one for my kitchen. However, as much as I love, love, love them, I’m having a hard time finding one without bold reds or oranges. I don’t have any reds/oranges in my home and I don’t know if I want to add it to my kitchen. But I think those colors are common in oriental rugs because of vegetable dyes made for those colors (?). And I’m also having a hard time finding any oriental rug I like in a 3×5 size. I’ve searched rugsusa, wayfair, overstock, e-rugs, EBTH, target, ebay, and craigslist and still can’t find anything that fits my desires.
But I love yours and all the examples that you gave!

Do you have a white paint colour you’d recommend in Benjamin Moore that would blend well with tribal rugs?

Eeck! I see these are moderated so will refine my question…

Do you have a white/off-white paint colour you’d recommend in Benjamin Moore that would blend well with tribal rugs? The floors are a yellow oak from the early 1940s. The window faces east. I’m in the PNW. Thanks!

One more time. Just checked the floor color and they are fir with reddish tones in it. So…
