I wasn’t looking for a coffee table when I came across mine at a thrift store. But, I loved it so much that I even rearranged our furniture to make it work. Fortunately, the bigger size and slightly distressed finish has worked out pretty well for us.
Since we’ve had kids, my only real requirement for a coffee table is that it can be used. That it can occasionally be danced on or jumped off of. That I can sit my Diet Coke down while watching The Bachelor and be able to concentrate on the rose ceremony instead of the place it’s making on my table. And, while I like the light and airy feel of glass tables, they’re not made for a house full of little dirty fingers.
Since I don’t have a source for my thrifted table, I rounded up a few other options that can take a little abuse and still add some character to your space:
Parquet Reclaimed Wood and Metal Coffee Table

Love the shots of your entertainment!!! Coffee table=stage. I like that parquet table from PB…just used it for a client’s living room. See you Friday :)
Love it! You have quite the entertainer there, of course that Aiden Coffee Table with the wheels may not be the best for dancing.
But, so great for rides around the living room! :)
Haha, and maybe right out the front door…
Love all the ones you have shared. Our coffee table has taken a beating with the dogs and kids. Then we actually refinished it and now it looks like new again. Ready yo go back to being used for anything the kids can come.up with but that’s OK. :)
Oh I remember when my kids would have done that!! Great suggestions. I still love that PB one with the Parquet top. I think they are getting better and better! Thanks so much for joining our group! Can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve on Friday!!
Cindy
Thanks, Cindy! I can’t wait to see, either. Ha! ;)
Love these. All coffee tables should be durable in my book! Can’t wait for Friday!
Great post…Love the photos!!! i learned the hard way having 4 kiddos super close in age and 3 being boys that a round table was needed. After an accident with the edge of the rectangle table we went square with rounded edges and ended the drama. 18 years later and i still have that square rounded table it sits in the game room and has a beautiful “child” made patina!
So glad we’re almost out of that rounded edges stage. The worst injury we’ve had was on some iron dining chairs that I Craigslisted shortly thereafter…
Great coffee table picks – I especially love the first one! Looking forward to seeing everyone’s styled coffee tables on Friday!
That parquet one is fantastic! I love a huge coffee table that can take feet, drinks, and the occasional pet or kid romp!
The harbor coffee table is so pretty! It looks like it would only get better with age! Great round up! I will say though that we ordered the West Elm carved table and it only has three legs so every time one of my boys leaned on it or sat on the edge it tipped over on them. Loved the look but it was NOT practical or made for kids. Unfortunately, it had to go back. World Market has a similar table but is flush to the ground. Similar look but much more stable!
Just a note from someone who owns the carved wood coffee table – it has a huge design flaw that makes it super dangerous to sit, climb or dance on. 3 legs means no stability! As soon as my toddler got a little bigger he would sit on the edge and the whole thing would topple over. Craigslisted soon thereafter! So as good looking as it is, I would not call it ‘durable’!
Thanks, Caroline. Good to know. It’s so low to the ground that I would never would have thought about it tipping.
This is maybe one of my favorite post titles. Ever.
Love the kid pics too:) #designforreallife
such a great idea for a post! i am always looking for things for clients that will look as good in 5 years as they do on day one (hopefully they’ll even look better with age). all great finds…just wondering if the mother-of-pearl options would hold up.
Such a great round up of coffee tables. I’m searching for one right now, so this is so helpful! Why is it so hard to make a decision for myself?!
