Since a new issue of Better Homes & Gardens Refresh just came out, I thought it would be okay scan in our entire article from the Fall/Winter magazine, for those of you who didn’t find it on newsstands. And, honestly, I’m just really proud of this feature. (That’s okay to say, right?) While I loved the first BH&G feature on our last house, something about this one just feels more personal, more “me”. Maybe it’s the fact that we actually still live in this house. (You may remember we moved out the day after our last shoot—and I was more than ready.) I love the way they followed up on our house—and our growing family. A lot can change in a short time!
After scanning in all of these pictures, I realized that I’ve already “refreshed” just about every single space they photographed. It’s never ending :)
If you want to see more, I wrote about a behind-the-scenes post here.
I loved seeing how you reused furniture from house to house. Very inspiring!
Hi Emily, Thanks for posting the spread! I never grabbed a copy of the magazine. It’s so beautiful and livable, too. Your bamboo blinds in the family room–did you paint the stripes on them? Another blind question–I have those white, faux wood blinds that were installed along the whole back of our house but nothing but drapes in the front rooms. I’d like to do bamboo but worry that it won’t be cohesive with the rest of the house. What’s your opinion? I really need to keep the white slatted blinds for light filtering and privacy and it’s nice to be able to adjust them since we spend most of our time in those rooms. Thanks in advance :)
Yes, I painted them :) Details here: https://emilyaclark.com/2013/04/painted-bamboo-shades-in-our-living-room.html
As for mixing up the window coverings, I don’t mind at all. We have the wide white blinds in all of the rooms except for our new den, in which I opted for the bamboo shades.
Thanks so much, Emily!
I love your home. I want to be able to furnish our new-to-us house (it’s not home yet) with thrift store finds like you did. Everything just seems to relaxed and casual, yet very put together. That’s the vibe I’m going for and you do such a good job at achieving it! And yes, you can be proud of your BHG feature. I know I would :)
Oh Congratulations!!!! I always love seeing your home and you totally amaze me with all you do. I can’t wait to get the magazine and read the entire spread.
Yes, me too! It’s nice to see a blogger who keeps it real, as some seem to move in to a new home and purchase all new things, leaving me wondering, “how do they do that?”
You’ve got “the eye”! Beautiful home. :)
Love it! Looks like it came right out of a magazine…er, wait ;)
I really like the way you take what you have and re-imagine it for new spaces and uses. Nice work and congrats on the magazine feature!
Congratulations on the article! Your home is lovely and all of the stuff – furniture, textiles, paint, and art – just works! May I ask where the mirror on page 35 in your “then” house came from? The large circular one with the scalloped detail?
Thanks, Lorna. I found that mirror at a thrift store (of course) and just brought it down from our attic to use in our den. Like a dummy, I propped it up in the playroom and one of the twins knocked it over and cracked it. Whoops…
Love this feature and love your style! You SHOULD be proud! I recently discovered your blog and literally spent an entire day getting lost in your talent! I’m also looking forward to visiting your booth soon. I noticed you’re a Kentucky fan, GO CATS! :)
It’s absolutely okay to feel proud! I love. love. love. love. the home office. I am falling more and more in love with built in book shelving. I don’t know that this type of shelving could work in our basement, but my wheels are still turning. I’d love to do shelving of some sort behind our couch and sort of give our basement a library/den feel. Everything is so gorgeous! Wonderful job! Congratulations!!
I grabbed a copy back when it came out and loved teh article. It definitely was a fun personal look at your house and little (not really) family!
Great post! Your house looks fabulous and you make it look so easy but I know how hard you work at it! oxox miss u!
Really like your house and decorating ideas. Bedroom is really pretty, where could I buy those geometric pillows ? I,ve been looking for both .Did you make those? The small black geometric pillow is neat and the yellow really makes the room pop
Bernie
The geometric pillows are from House of Pemberley on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/people/houseofpemberley. The fabric is David Hicks La Fiorentina. The smaller pillows is navy and white and was from C Wonder a couple of years ago.
Love your decorating style. Looks so comfy!
Love the article and love the blog. I’ve learned a lot about adding character to my home through your blog and always enjoy reading it. Also, I think of you often lately as I just found out I am very unexpectedly expecting twins! They will arrive in June. I have two kids already through the beautiful gift of adoption. My husband and I were told we could never conceive…..uhhhh….well…..God decided otherwise. Here I am 16 weeks pregnant with two! Things can change VERY quickly in a year! I remember the picture you posted of you and your husband’s faces the day you found out you were having twins. My husband and I are now making those same faces! :) Stunned, but blessed. Thanks for sharing your decorating journey as well as your journey with twins. It makes me feel like it is possible to have a beautiful home AND also it’s possible to get through the first year with twins!
How amazing for you! You have idea the blessing that’s in store for you. Makes me so happy just to think about :)
HI, Emily! I missed this magazine, so happy to see your beautiful feature. You have truly taken this house to the next level with your decorating skills. Love your style, girl!!
Thank you, Rhoda :)
I love this article! Your home shines.
YAY!!! So awesome and well deserved!
Emily, thank you for sharing the article. Your home inspires me when I’m in the mood for change. Awesome powder room. Your twins are growing up so fast before us readers. God bless you and your family.
The whole article is really nice. I love how you updated things. I think I prefer what you have now to what you had then.
I love your style and use of mirrors. I am passionate about sunburst mirrors and have been looking for one similar to the one that was in your living room, but is now in your bedroom. Where did you find it?
I found that years ago at a small home decor outlet that has since closed. I think it was originally manufactured by CBK.
What a great feature! Loved the “then” and “now”s – especially the family photo one. :)
