My Most Asked-About Accessories

January 23, 2015

I find it interesting that I get asked about the same three things in my home on a pretty regular basis. I’m happy to answer questions, but thought I’d just put these things out there for anyone else who was wondering. . .

Q: Where did you get the mirror above your mantel?

A: I ordered the wood sunburst from Ballard Designs a couple of years ago, and unfortunately, they no longer carry it. Mine is 48” inches wide, but One Kings Lane has one listed now that looks very similar, just on a slightly smaller scale (36”).

Q: Where did you find the botanical art (previously) in your entry, and what size frames/mats did you use?

A: This was an inexpensive project that covered a large amount of wall. I pulled pages from this coffee table book and bought these plastic frames (or ones very much like them) at Michael’s and sprayed them gold. I then had custom mats cut from an Ebay seller. (It’s been so long that I can’t find the seller in my purchase history. . . )  The frames are 16 x 20” and the mat openings are 4.75 x 6.75”.

If you aren’t a fan of botanicals, I wrote about some other great books for framing here.

Q: Do you still like the jute rug in your living room, and how’s it holding up?

A: I would buy this rug again, without a doubt. It shows nothing! A huge plus, when you’ve got five people who like to sneak food and drink where they’re not suppose to. . . It’s a chenille/jute blend which makes it a lot softer than most natural area rugs. I’ve only had to trim a few spots over the last three years and although a few readers have mentioned that they’ve had issues with shedding, I never noticed it with ours. (Can you tell I love this rug?!)

I have the same rug. It is beautiful-but, mine sheds horribly! I have had it 18 months but am currently shopping for its replacement. It gets all over my kids’ clothing, pillows-I am terrified to vacuum because it fills up the canister every time. It looks old and nasty now. I am so discouraged. I have read other reviews and other people have been having similar issues. I wonder if they switched materials or manufacturers because Emily’s rug still looks so nice!

That’s so strange. And discouraging :( I bought mine in 2011. Wonder if they’ve changed something once then.

I agree the rug is soft and wonderful to walk on or look at. However, we bought ours in 2013 and couldn’t sit on it because the fibers covered our clothes. I was so disappointed! It was worse than dog or cat hair.
LOVED those prints and LOVE the mirror. Not surprised these are your top 3 most asked about. :)

I may be wrong but I was looking at a mirror similar to yours at World Market. It may not be as nice and was very affordable for my limited budget.

Hey there Emily – it’s me! I’ve been reading but not commenting forever. I still love our huge Ballard mirror and it lives in a gorgeous place above a fireplace in our new house. Everyone always asks about it and I tell them I found driftwood, but it into pieces and made the mirror. I say this with a straight face and am believed almost always. Then I burst into laughter and pour them more wine:)

I have always liked the mirror, the size, color & style. Will have to keep my eye out in case Ballard decides to bring it back.

We’ve never had an indoor pet so I’ll have to let somebody else answer on that one…

Just some kind of antique/brushed gold. I’m not certain of the name.
