I have mentioned before that I would almost rather have a root canal than have my pictures taken—by myself. I don’t know why I instantly go all awkward, but I do. I knew it was time to have my profile picture for the blog updated, but kept putting it off. Fortunately, I have Lindsay (Hart to Hart Digital Photography) who makes all painful photography sessions better.I went to her house several weeks ago, and she patiently walked me through what to do. She knows I need direction down to the last detail and somehow made me feel totally at ease. Don’t you think that makes 100% of the difference—if you feel comfortable with who’s taking the photos?
When I started my my blog five years ago, the first profile picture I put up was 3/4 of my head because I had cropped out the rest of my family. The second photo I used was one I made my husband take, and my mom took another one of me with puffy pregnancy cheeks (not her fault, btw). After that, I started having my profile pictures professionally made—because I really do think it makes a big difference on the first impression that your blog gives. And, whether we admit it or not, don’t you automatically assume what that blogger must be like based on that one picture that sticks in your head anytime you think of their blog?
I’ve been thinking lately about what advice I would give to new bloggers. Besides a nice looking blog header, I think a professional headshot is super important. It instantly tells your readers (and companies) that this is your work, your business and you treat it like a real job. It might be painful for a few minutes, but it’s so worth it once it’s all said and done.
Lindsay is sharing more photos from my session over on her blog today. Go see them—and don’t laugh. :)
Such a gorgeous headshot. I hate taking pictures of myself too and it’s become a huge problem to get a new headshot. Mine was taken by my 12 year old son since he happens to be the only one I feel comfortable with.
great pic! Was also wondering if you would share your home photographer ? Thanks! Liz
Lindsay also took the photos for my home tour :)
Lindsay is an amazing photographer! I have had ONE professional “head” shot that was taken for Traditional Homes New Trads for 2012. Bloggers were asked to nominate their pick and I was delighted when I found out Melanie Turner, my nomination, was one of the 10 selected from all over the country. .Traditional Homes arranged for Emily Followill for the shot. Ever since, I appreciate what a great, professional can offer!!! The photo belongs to Traditional Homes so unfortunately I don’t have a copy to use. . I
I remember that! So fun yours was chosen!
What an experience!!! I have 6 copies of the magazine that I will save FOREVER!!!
I am so glad you remembered!!!
Love them all! And, your hair looks great like this! Happy Thanksgiving!
I think you look drop-dead gorgeous. And that hair-style is perfect on you. I want your hair-cut! Your smile and countenance invite us in.
This makes me laugh because my headshot is totally cropped out of a family photo (at least taken by a professional) and this is on my to-do list. Yours new photos looks amazing, inspires me to make that phone call!
And, I owe you an email, btw! Coming soon–I promise :)
You are adorable and she sure knows her stuff. Great job Emily and Lindsay!
YESYES… YESYESYES. I cannot tell you how much it grates my nerves to see photographers with iPhone photos used on their “about me” page…. HELLO!!! Way to not think what you do is important! I agree, it makes you appear 100% more professional, and it makes a huge difference in how comfortable you feel with the person photographing you. It’s one of the main reasons I urge my wedding clients to have a session before the wedding (engagement or bridal) so that they aren’t so stiff with me on the wedding day :-)
You have the best head shot of all the blogs I follow and I think yours is the most professional. That’s why you are my first click on my lunch break. Well done!
I love this shot of you! Is she local? I need to hire her! I need some new ones for my new website.
Yes! And, she is awesome. You would love her!
Great picture! You look gorgeous!
Sorry to vent here but as the wife of an Endodontist I get offended when people talk about root canals. Root canals save teeth from being extracted and get lots of people out of a very painful situation. Just saying.
I think you might be serious, but this actually gave me a great laugh. I may have now managed to offend everyone with my blog :)
I loved your reply!
It made me think that when I go to the dentist, I would rather see my OB instead!
I’m just sayin…..

I must admit I have now found a great female dentist that I love….still don’t like the experience 1 bit!
I love your new head shot! Thanks for putting this post together. I’m cringing cause I know this nudge totally pertains to me. I think I’ll get some photos done the next time I get my haircut (which happens like once a year!).
I think yours is really good! Fun and friendly :)
Gorgeous headshot! I work in theatre and film and have to keep an up-to-date headshot on file at all times. And I’m not even an actor! Headshots are such a tricky thing. We want to look like the best version of ourselves and when you’re not used to being in front of the camera it can be a difficult thing to accomplish. Thankfully there are amazing photographers who are there to help those of us not used to being in front of the lens.
Lisa.
Such a lovely photo! I have to ask…would you share your beauty routine? I love how your makeup looks done but not too done!
Wow Emily! I commented on your profile pic the moment I noticed it a few weeks ago, but somehow am just catching this post now. STUNNING is only the tip of the iceberg, I could gush on and on! Such a statement making picture. I need your gal to come to Wisconsin… my remote camera clicker is not cutting it! :)
You are too kind :) And, I’m impressed you do your own photos with a remote.
