My Ammo Box Herb Garden

May 27, 2014

herbs

I’m giving my herb garden another go this year. And this time, I’m even going to use water. :) I bought these old ammo boxes at a flea market a couple of years ago and thought they’d make the perfect containers.

I took off the wood lids and used one of them on the bottom to make room for drainage. The two tiers let me plant the taller herbs in the bottom box and the shorter ones in the top:

It sits on the edge of our patio, and I think the markings on the sides add a lot of character:

This is perfect! You’re so right that these boxes add a ton of character. I want to grow herbs this summer too and I’m trying to decide if keeping them on my screen porch is better or if I should make a little raised garden bed outside like you did. I tend to kill plants so I’m hoping to do it right this summer! :)

They need lots of sun and a screen porch is not enough light for them so definitely put them outside!

Great idea! I love having a little herb garden as well – it’s so handy and I cant get enough of cilantro so having it at the ready all the time is really nice!

Looks awesome but pull that mint out and put it in it’s own container!!!! We learned the hard way – it’s like a parasite and will take over and choke out everything. We had to tear out our planter box and throw all the soil away because it killed our rosemary and we couldn’t get rid of it. It does not die!

We have been wanting to do something like this. You gave me a push. Now I need cute, rustic boxes. We go through so much cilantro . . . time I planted my own.

I love it! I hope you have good luck with your herbs this year – try giving watering duties to your oldest daughter. I have a black thumb but my daughter has relished being the family plant waterer and is so much better about keeping track of getting the job done than I am!

Love this! Looks great and is a good reminder to look outside of your standard pot for a container.

I have a green thumb so a bit of advice. Take those herbs back out of the soil and pull those peat pots completely off. I know they say they decompose but they take so long to do it and wick away so much moisture that they are really harmful to the plants. Also pull the roots loose so that they can relax and spread out once you replant them. It is so great to be able to step outside and cut fresh herbs for meals. You will love it!

One more tip-in the fall plant the oregano in the ground. Give it plenty of room because it will get two to three feet across after a few years. I have had mine for about 18 years and it grows abundantly and without a bit of care.

Your herb garden is so lovely! I’m brainstorming a creative way to add one to our back deck this year. Fresh mint & cilantro everyday would be heavenly.

I second the comment about separating the mint. It grows really quickly and takes over everything. That’s why it’s not recommended to plant in the ground along with other things. It spreads like you wouldn’t believe.

Lana’s oregano tip has me wanting to try my hand at some this year too!
