Picking A Front Door Color & Shopping For Hardware

March 11, 2014

A little update on the post I wrote about replacing our front door. I chose this one, and it’ll be here in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, I have to get busy choosing a paint color. Pairing up a color with our pinkish brick is tricky, but I’m 99.9% settled on a mossy green. Now, to find the right shade. I want it to definitely be green without screaming “the house with the green front door!”, if that makes sense. . .

Isn’t it funny how the shades of the same color look so different once you get them home? If any of you have recommendations that I should check out, let me know. I’m trying to make a decision within the next week. (This color is just for the door itself, by the way. Everything else is staying as is.)

Of the Behr swatches I picked up last week, I like these the best so far:

I’m also shopping for hardware and am definitely going with brass.  I’ve always wanted a pretty door knocker but am trying to figure out if it’s too much if I do another kick plate with it, or maybe I just do one or the other. It’s kind of like trying to decide if you have on too much jewelry before leaving the house.

And, if you have no opinion whatsoever on this, I also welcome comments about last night’s Bachelor finale because I’m dying to talk to somebody about it. (No one was awake by the time I finished watching it at 1 am.) That JP is something else. I feel like we should start a “Save Nikki” fund.

I don’t have an opinion about the door. I know you will rock it. I DO have an opinion about JP from the Bachelor. WHAT A JERK! I can’t believe that ABC put up with all that…isn’t there a conduct clause in the contract, or what you must be willing to reveal. At least the ratings should be good for the “I have to see this idiot” factor. If I were a Nikki’s mom, I would be very disappointed in her decision to stay with him….even if it is only for a while.

Looking at your great back porch area I noticed the mirror frame you painted green. It looks great with the brick! What about using that color for the front door or maybe toning it down a shade? That green has just enough yellow to contrast against the pink in your brick and will be perfection in showcasing the new brass hardware!

I think I like the middle green color best. And as for The Bachelor… wow, I couldn’t believe it. I thought Clare was over the line making the comment about him as a father… she can think it, but I don’t think she should have voiced it. She could have made her point without attacking him as a father.

In regards to his refusal to say I love you… the person I felt so bad for was Nikki, and I think Chris Harrison shouldn’t have pushed the issue, because he only made it worse for her. Juan Pablo’s family did kinda warn her… but then again I am SURE that editing plays a big role on what we see and the story the producers decide to tell.

I feel bad for all the negative thoughts and texts/tweets/comments that people are making about both of them. I wouldn’t date him, nor would I recommend a friend to, but he’s a person, he’s a human being and we should all be kind. He will never look at himself critically when people are so hard on him.. he will only push back! Time will tell if they stay together over time.

Honestly I was always surprised with people willing to marry after such a quick time on the show… I think it’s WAY more realistic to not get engaged and actually DATE in normal life. anyway… enough about that. I love seeing your progress and can’t wait to see how the door turns out :)

Emily, I like the second one you have on the door. I like your direction with green, looks great with the brick! I also have a cracking wood door and will be in the same boat pretty soon.

I hadn’t watched the Bachelor season at all until last night. I thought he was so rude it was funny, then I realized it’s real life (maybe?) and I was so sad for Nikki! I’d love to know what her family says after that show last night.

I definitely like the brighter green the best. The one on bottom of the first “on the door” picture. And I don’t think that having a door knocker is bad when combined with a kick plate. It’s just enough jewelry. :)

I love that you’re going with green. It still seems to be an uncommon front door colour. It’ll look smashing with that heavy door knocker. I might try it without the kickplate first and see how you like it?

I had never watched this season of the Bachelor until last night and ohmigosh, why would anyone want to be with him? I felt so bad for Nikki. But so many women find themselves in that situation and still stay, convincing themselves “I’ll be the one to change him”. He never does.

My vote is for the the bottom swatch that is one the actual door. I think it will look great with brass and a good contrast against the brick. I don’t watch the Bachelor anymore…and I am really okay with that now :)

I LOVE the amazon jungle green. I think it’s the perfect, mossy shade.

And go for the brass kick plate AND door knocker. It’ll look amazing.

As for The Bachelor, I will simply reiterate what I said on Twitter – good thing my blowgun is out of sterilization darts. JP is a moron.

Love the green door colors! As for JP- I felt so uncomfortable the entire time watching his dates with Clare and Nikki. You could just see the dissappointment on Nikkis face when he read the card she gave him. “Thank you? I have you here for a reason?” like WHAT?!! Nikki’s family was so classy, she deserves someone who is willing to say he cares about her!

I like the fifth color from the left in the first photo but I see someone made a good point (in her comment) about your green round mirror on your back patio. It works with your brick so well. About Juan Pablo….how much of a red flag was it when his own mother tells Clare that “he makes me cry, too” and when his cousin asks the ladies “what will you do when he walks away/ breaks up with you?”. Weird.

I like the brightest green (the bottom one on the actual door). Think any of those greens with a brass door knocker will look great!

I recently used SW Olive Green on my front door, though my trim is a slightly reddish brown and my bricks are pale. But the color looks similar to the bottom sample on your door, and it reads green w/o screaming.

I love the bottom “pea green” color. I think it will add some lightness to the front, and will go great with gold! All of them are great choices though! Can’t wait to see which one you pick. :)

I’m definitely feeling the middle one on the door! Green is going to be amazing on your new front door!! I saw clips of the Bachelor on Kathie Lee and Hoda this morning! What a jerk! How does someone like that end up on T.V? I think I get why he’s a bachelor though!!!

I like the darkest green, but they’re all nice. I watched the bachelor too. I think they were pressuring him to say “I love you”. I do think he picked the right girl to date….but, who knows where it will go.

Hi Emily, I’m a long time followerer from Ontario , Canada. In regards to your front door a colour I think would be spectacular is BM Impervo Black Forest Green Ext. RM . I’m going to paint my new (hopefully ) front door this colour. I think it will really enhance your brick .

Emily, I really enjoy reading your blog! I never really post comments but I went through a similar decision making process when we bought our house and I appreciated feedback. Our home has red brick and black shutters and it had a black door. In an attempt to differentiate it and make it more “me” I chose to go with a green door too. I chose Garden of Paradise by Valspar which I thought was perfect since I have four boys! I guess it depends on how you define paradise… Anyway, I love my green door and I’ve gotten many compliments on it since I painted it. Good luck! I am sure whatever you decide will be beautiful.

I like the darker green. The one on top. However, I like all three green choices more than I like Juan Pablo. What a horrible choice to be The Bachelor. Horrible. Poor Nikki. It won’t last a month. What I’m looking forward to is Andy as the Bachelorette. Love everything about her except her attempt to catch bad guys on the streets of ATL in six inch heels. Come on…

When I first saw the fan of colors I chose either the 4th or 5th (from L to R), and I think they both made it into your final selection. From the picture with the three colors on the door, I lean toward the middle color, but honestly go with your instinct. I know it’ll be lovely. Personally, I think a door knocker & kick plate will be beautiful.

I can’t wait to see what you do. We have a white house and a solid wood door that I’m hesitant to paint, but it looks rather worn.

Regarding the Bachelor: totally agree with you: poor Nikki! Especially when Chris mentioned that JP had a surprise and then JP denied it– what a letdown for her! Her face was heartbreaking. I think the real winner is Claire. She got out just in time — like the old G. Brooks’ song “Some of God’s best gifts are unanswered prayers. “

Oh Nikki, Nikki, Nikki… you do know that Huhwhaaaan will be kicking you to the curb so fast that it’s going to make your mismatched earrings fall from your lobes. He is one insensitive “I’m just being honest” jerk. Hopefully after Nikki picks herself up from the curb she’ll be shaking her head and saying “what was I thinking?”

Emily, I’m in Charlotte as well… give me a holler if you want to meet for coffee and we can dis Huhwhaaan til our heart’s content!

    Hi Emily,
I came across your blog on Pinterest, and I LOVE it! I find myself checking each new post you make and looking forward to the next:) I see that you are a busy mom with a ton of talent, and I think that this and the fact that I just love your style is why I was drawn to your blog. I have three kids myself, and I divide my time between substituting at my kids’ school,, being a mom and wife, and my true passion…design and decorating. I also have a blog, I just wanted to let you know that this last post about changing out your front door caught my attention because this projects has also been on my TO DO list for awhile now. Seeing your post is what prompted me to get moving on choosing a door for out home. The door I chose is a little similar to your door, and I loved your idea about the knocker for the front. I wanted to thank you for all of your wonderful posts and ideas that you provide. I may NEVER have started the process of changing out our door if I had not read your posts! I can’t wait to see how your door turns out! I am certain it will be as beautiful as everything else you have done to your home! I will be posting the before and after of our front door on my blog, as well!
    Thanks Again!
