I wasn’t necessarily looking for new lamps, but I found them last week. They are blue and white and made to live in my house.
Apparently, Marshall’s and TJMaxx (and probably HomeGoods, too?) are getting some Visual Comfort lamps lately. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it’s a designer brand, normally sold to-the-trade.) I’ve spotted a couple of different styles in the last month. (And, I noticed that people are snatching them up and listing them on Ebay for 3x the price.)
It’s not the cheapest lamp I’ve ever bought. After all, you know I’m a girl that likes her $1 lamps. But, it’s still a great price for the brand, and I figured I’ve used enough thrifted lamps in my house over the years that I can splurge a little every now and then. (What can I say? I was trained to shop sale racks. I’m the queen of justifying my purchases.)
Plus, I just really love them and am 99% sure they’ll stand the accessory test of time for me. They always say that it’s smart to invest in timeless pieces when it comes to your wardrobe. I think the same is true for your home.
Of course, what’s worth the investment for me might be totally different for you. For example, I couldn’t justify putting a lot of money into nice furniture—especially upholstery—at this season of our lives. It just doesn’t line up with how we use our home. But, a pretty pair of lamps that I can look at and enjoy every day while they’re (hopefully) tucked safely away on top of our piano? That feels okay to me.
What pieces do you think are worth investing in around the house?
I’m a softy for lamps too. And, our piano is about the only place I don’t have any. So glad to see you put your new lamps on your piano. Looks like I’ll be shopping for some soon too! I just bought two clear glass ones from Target and they are such nice quality. Love your blue ones!
That’s not a bad price for something you really love. Well worth the splurge, those lamps are gorgeous!
I snatched up a couple of the Visual Comfort lamps at HomeGoods! Great prices!
I believe good pillows are worth the investment – I hate synthetic fabric covers over poly fills – yuck! I always advise clients to pay for good fabric and big, fluffy, down fills!

I totally agree about the inserts!
Where do you recommend buying down inserts for decorative pillows for the sofa? I never see them anywhere and I’m obviously looking at all the wrong places!
I get most of my down inserts from IKEA but my local fabric store also carries them.
Does anyone have an inexpensive, online source they use?
Crate and barrel has great down inserts too!
I’ve purchased my inserts from Pottery Barn.
I check the clearance aisles at Marshall’s, TJ’s and HomeGoods. Sometimes you’ll find a pillow that is on clearance for under $10.00. The pillow cover may be ugly, tattered or have a broken zipper; BUT it will have a lovely down pillow insert.
This is a great tip, and I always forget to look for pillows for that reason!
LOVE the lamps! I’m a big fan of anything blue and white!
Those lamps are gorgeous!! Right now I only have TJ Maxx nearby and haven’t seen any Visual Comfort lamps yet .. fingers crossed!
It always been hard for me to splurge on items like this because I’m so terribly afraid that I’ll grow sick of them within a few months. But I’m not so sure that I would ever grow tired of these gorgeous lamps. What a fantastic buy.
I am a sucker for a good deal…but I think splurging is reserved for items that you know will get use daily. I think I would splurge on good bedding and overhead lights. I think the right lighting can help pull a room together. Right now my living room is a complete misc mess of items and I am actively looking for the right room layout to make it seem less bad eclectic and more pulled together. I just might have to start from scratch for this room!
Gorgeous lamps! I really do love them in your entry. And totally justified. BTW, I use museum wax to secure breakables.
Smart idea! I wonder what else I could secure with museum wax…
Those lamps are worth every penny! They look like they were made for that spot in your house!
The lamps look really good in your house. Perfection.
I’ve seen lots of blue and white lamps by visual comfort at our local home goods. I haven’t bought any. yet. :) i’m also trying to resist buying the Peacock Alley sheet sets at Tuesday morning for the last week. my car just seems to drive itself there. and just fyi…I’ve seen pillow inserts online at overstock.com
Great source–I forgot about Overstock for inserts.
Yes!! I also had my eye on these at TJ Maxx. All of a sudden, they’re getting Visual Comfort lamps!! They look gorgeous in your foyer. :)
Oh, those really are gorgeous lamps. I love them. They are beautiful on the piano and I agree, so classic you will love them for years. Hugs, Marty
These are gorgeous! Now…. where’s the bust that was up there? If you want to sell it, I’ll buy it from you!! ;)
She’s in transition (aka sitting on my desk) but I think she’s moving back into my bedroom :)
These are gorgeous! I love your little insider tips here and there, too : ] At this season in our lives of living with young ones I don’t think there’s much I feel is worth investing in. If I found something that made my heart sing, of course I would consider it though.
Those fit right in beautifully, Emily! I’m loving the vintage Ethan Allen pair that I got on CL several months ago, but there are too many different spots where I want to use them! I’m so drawn to blue and white pieces right now. They are hard to resist!
I just bought these exact lamps today at HomeGoods. I’m debating where I can put them, the piano is a good idea. I got another Visual Comfort lamp there last week, for about $400 less than what they go for.
Agree 100%! It’s good to invest in quality pieces for your home and what is seen as ‘worth investing’ will be different for every person. I’m a firm believer in a really good pair of lamps. I think it’s great that quality pieces are becoming more available and affordable these days. Great lamps are like great jewelry-they never seem to go on sale.
The lamps are gorgeous and totally worth the price! I just picked one up too in my local Marshall’s and I love it! I’m on the lookout for more! I posted about my lamp here: http://www.christinamarieinteriors.com/2014/02/bathroom-updates-and-new-lamp.html
Christina, I love yours. I hadn’t seen that style in the store yet. Looks great!
beautiful. really shocked they are getting visual comforts lamps…
Tough one as I am too a fan of the $1 treasure!! Love the lamps. Good pillow inserts & moreover excellent sleeping pillows & thirsty towels are worth the extra bucks. And no body wants to sleep on a “gently used” pillow!!
one thing I have learned over the years of having my own home, is, you don’t have to rush out tomorrow to ‘fill that space’ you will get bored, and regret it, the times I have ‘splurged’ and really really loved something, I have never gotton tired of!!!.. well for at least a little while ;)
sometimes it’s better to splurge and love, than buy for buying sake, and regretting .. and spending more money on the thing you loved in the first place LOL
Yes! I have done this :)
I love these blue and white lamps-so classic!
