One of the questions I get asked over and over again is about our jute rug in the living room and how soft it is. For a natural fiber rug, it’s one of the softer ones I’ve come across. Easy on bare feet and not scratchy. It’s a chenille/jute blend which helps with that. But, would I want to lay down and take a nap on it? Probably not.
If you saw last week’s post about the girls’ bedroom, you may have noticed I switched out the striped rug for a more natural one there, too. It’s this chenille jute one from PB Kids and feels like a soft carpet. Like soft enough that you could lay your face on—if you wanted to. . . It’s great for their room since they’re often on the floor, anyway, but could be a great option for a living room, too.
I like that it gives you the texture of a natural area rug but has a subtle pattern:
I ordered the gray border, but it also comes in a navy or pink banding. The biggest size offered is an 8×10—something to consider if you’re thinking of using it in a family room. (I did a post here on how to choose the right rug size for your room.)
Hope this helps for any of you looking for a soft natural rug option.
I love it! Does it shed? My natural rugs cover my daughter in lint when she lays on them- but maybe I just need to vacuum more often? :)
I haven’t noticed it shedding at all, actually. It’s really more like carpeting. The one in our living room sheds minimally (although I have a friend with the same rug and she’s had more of a problem with that).
Thanks!
The rug looks great. I love the look of natural rugs but tend to shy away from them due to the fact that they aren’t that soft. I will have to check that one out!

I will be checking this one out as well. I love the look but felt they would be too itchy for little feet (and big feet too).
I love natural fiber ones and we got a big one for our living room last summer, also from Pottery Barn. It has held up really well. is super soft, and I just love the look!

Emily, thanks for the suggestion as I have three rooms that need new rugs! Two questions: In your opinion, would it hold up in a kitchen with hardwoods? Also, is it thick? My 1/2 bath needs a new rug but it can’t be too thick. Thanks for al your inspiration!
A neighbor of mine got the PB (not kids) jute rug and had such a huge problem with shedding, they took it back and refunded her money after a few weeks. It was crazy, like small tumbleweeds all over her house. She replaced it with the West Elm herringbone jute chenille and had no shedding issues.
My friend said the same thing about hers but I’ve barely noticed any with ours. So strange…
Do you know how this compares to the West Elm herringbone jute chenille in thickness or softness? The pattern and color seem the same…
Emily….love both of your rug choices. I debated and debated to go with the PB Chenile/Jute or the West Elm Herringbone….ended up with West Elm due to coloring of my room. Both are beautiful. Looking forward to your family room progress.
Johanna….the West Elm herringbone is roughly 1/2″ think….very soft. Reminds me of a very thickly knitted fisherman’s wool sweater. It is very similar in coloring to the PB rug Emily has, but the West Elm only has the ivory trim on each end. I like the idea of having choices for banding around the edges. I do have one of the waffle weave pads underneath my rug, it’s on hardwood; but will probably upgrade to the solid rug pad soon.
PS….our dog loves laying on this rug. We’ve had some that she refused to walk on! Ha!
Thank you! I’m looking at it for a nursery rug.
Based on comments from your blog, I bought the jute/chenille PB rug for my living room and love it! It’s practically indestructable!
I was JUST looking at this rug on PB.com the other day wondering about it’s shedding and durability. I love this guy and think it’s a perfect foil for bold furnishings without it being boring!
I have a lab and two kids. I have carpeting in the bedrooms. What is your opinion on putting rugs on top of carpet? Can the be vacuumed with the same frequency and ease of normal carpet?
Tiffany, I’ve always layered rugs on top of carpet and love the way it looks–and the way it covers up the way our carpet has been abused :)
Emily — I was just thinking of buying the pb kids one for our family room! I wish it didn’t have the colored border, but I’m thinking if I go with the grey, we’ll be okay?
I definitely think the gray would be the least noticeable.
Emily where did you get the bed skirts? Love those ruffles!
I ordered mine from Wayfair. PBKids has a similar option, as well.
Emily, Thank you for the info.
How would you clean a rug like this?
You can probably get official instructions on PB’s site, but I just spot clean as needed and vacuum.
I am looking for a soft jute but need to be cautious of fibers that will trap sweet, fine, little, black cocker spaniel hairs :) It will be for my main living area with kids and main traffic as well. My first attempt was some type of ivory wool and it kept dirt and hair at all times. It was nasty. My second attempt is a brown indoor/outdoor rug that is a-ok on keeping away dirt and staying tidy, but…you know where I’m headed – it’s killer on the feet. I’m looking for a soft jute that’s forgiving on the dirt. Are you able to advise?
I don’t have experience with pets, but I love the jute one we have in our living room:

Hi..
Great share..
I don’t have a good experience with the rugs.
Every time I order rugs, in a week or two the threads start coming out that looks to messy.
Along with this if my daughter crawls on it, it sticks to her clothes.
Any suggestions for this?
