The Bedroom Plan: Mixing Black & Navy

September 2, 2013

I’ve been enjoying the long weekend with no alarm clocks, no plans and a lot of time spent in my (hot) garage doing this:

navy paint

Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy

gloss black paint

Valspar’s Gloss Black

“Operation Take Back Our Bedroom” has officially begun.  Now that the babies have moved to their own room, I’m ready to make it feel like a grown-up space.  Instead of buying new bedding, I decided to take a cue from what we already have on the bed and mix in more navy and black throughout the room—with touches of gold.

bedroom pillows

Navy and black is one of those combos that feels so rich to me now, but I used to think wouldn’t work well together in the same room.  (Kind of like  mixing metals, or grays with gold—which I don’t think twice about doing anymore.)  I’m loving the mix of shades of blue with black lately and am bringing it into our room with a  couple of revamped painted pieces that I’ll show you as soon as they’re all finished.

Enjoy your Labor Day!  (I’ll be in my garage.)

I’m excited to see this. I love the color navy, and was thinking of using it on my kitchen cabinets, but was hesitant because I just wasn’t sure what it would look like with my black appliances. But, now I’m thinking I’ll get a sample and try it out. Thanks for sharing! :)

Your room looks so luxe with these colors! I’m glad you posted this because my living room has plenty of navy and I was just thinking this morning that I’d like to add more black, but I was nervous. Thanks for blazing the trail for me! xo, Abby M.

I agree emily, Love black and navy, so very rich looking. I have a pinboard called black and white and blue all over….http://pinterest.com/kathysue/black-white-and-blue-all-over/
I had to make a board because of loving blue with black and white. I know it is not for everyone, but it works in my home nicely and it is soon to be very lovely in your home!!

Can’t wait to see it! I love black and navy together. For years we were made to think it shouldn’t be done – but now our eyes tell us differently.

Oh how lovely, Emily! That color combination is so beautiful and I cannot wait to see what you do! I also have to say that I absolutely love grey and gold together and I’ve been trying to convince my mom to do their bedroom in that color scheme for the past year!

    Blessings,
    Kayla
