Easy Laundry Room Updates & $500 Home Depot Giveaway

August 6, 2013

Sometimes, you just have to work with what you’ve got.  And, I’ve got ferns.  Lots and lots of ferns.

laundry room wallpaper

Removing the wallpaper in our laundry room is on my to-do list, but it’s not happening this year.  Or next year. Or possibly until the twins go to college. . . But, for now, I spend a lot of my time in there and wanted to make it a little happier place to be.

laundry room before

Although I might not fall completely in love with our laundry room until I redecorate it, I did make some quick—and inexpensive—updates recently that made it a little cuter and more functional in the meantime.  Because even if you can’t do a complete redesign, I believe a few small changes can at least give you a better attitude. . .  So, here’s what did:

cork board backsplash

laundry room art

(My mom hand-lettered one of  my favorite quotes for me.)

organizing laundry room shelves

laundry room basket storage

These Martha Stewart fabric bins from The Home Depot are great for catching clutter (and come in lots of colors).

laundry storage bins

Glass canisters and cute bottles are a fun storage option for bleach, fabric softener, etc.

organizing the laundry room

laundry room door organizer

lighting in laundry room

Now, even my laundry room has a little “ambience.” Winking smile

(The tray is the lid from a laundry hamper I found at a yard sale.)

Whether your laundry room project is big or small, Tide, The Home Depot, and Maytag have all teamed up for the #BrilliantHEClean campaign.  Just visit this site to enter to win a Maytag washer/dryer, a year’s worth of Tide, $5000 to redo your laundry room and an e-design consultation with Jenny of The Little Green Notebook. (Contest ends Aug. 19th.)

As a bonus, Jenny is sharing her best laundry redesign tips here.

Oh Emily, where do I start?!!? I have lived in my house for 8 years and haven’t touched my laundry room b/c I’ve been so busy with the rest of the house– but my laundry room is HORRID. I would use change EVERYTHING, but probably first on my list would be the flooring. Right now, it’s curling/dirty/cut (don’t ask) linolieum. And our cat litter box is in this room, so you can imagine with CUT linolieum how it gets in every crevice. HORRID I tell you! I would put this $500 to amazing use!:)

I would love to make ours bigger! We have a large pantry behind our laundry room; I would love to tear down the wall so we could push the washer and drier back into that space to give us more room for storing laundry baskets, etc. Easier said that done, so in the meantime we’ll likely add some shelves and a fresh coat of paint. Thanks for the great giveaway!

I really need some additional shelving. Our laundry closet is quickly becoming over run with extra soap, bathroom tissue, paper towels, and other random bulk store purchases. These things get stacked and balanced until you wonder if you’ll be buried the next time you open the doors! I have wanted to add some cabinets or just some deeper shelves for months.

My laundry room is basically a crawl space in the basement accessed by a very steep and narrow staircase, so the biggest improvement beyond any decorating would be to actually have a laundry ROOM. But since, like you, I have to work with what I have, I would settle for a new dryer that doesn’t screech loudly and shake the house. :)

I would first get a new washer for my laundry room. Then get a room to make a laundry room from. Mine is a narrow hallway off the kitchen with no storage other than 2 tiny cabinets and coat room with nothing to hang coats. It’s more of an empty inset in the hall. I guess I’d do alot, but a new washer is tops on the list.

And, maybe put a countertop over our set (hence a new set). I hide everything in there before people come over. Be careful when you open the doors!

New flooring! My laundry room has builder grade linoleum in white which is okay. When the delivery people installed my new dryer several years ago, they put a tear in it. I didn’t discover it until the next time I cleaned the floor (which I don’t do as often as I should!) They had covered up the tear with my rug and left.

Great post, a laundry room is not where most people want to spend their design dollars but a beautiful space can make the drudgery of doing laundry a little less.

Our “laundry room” is in the garage, with the washer on one side, and the dryer on the opposite wall. So I get to haul clean (but wet) laundry across the dirty garage floor and hopefully not drop anything! My plan is to make our adjacent mudroom into the laundry room, but that requires running plumbing from the half bath for the washer hookup. A $500 Home Depot card would buy us the plumbing fittings we need to make it happen!

My laundry room is in the unfinished part of our basement, and I would love some sort of organization for the top of the washer and dryer for detergent, bleach, etc. Love your glass canister and think I’ll do the same with the Oxyclean granules I have. Thankfully I have plenty of room for a huge folding table, a three-bin canvas sorting cart, a drying rack, right next to the wall basket that catches clothes from the laundry shoot. Now if I could only find a way to get the folded laundry back up the shoot, so I didn’t have to carry it up two flights of stairs….

With four kids, I spend a bunch of time in our laundry room. When we moved into this house nearly 5 years ago, it was one of the first rooms I tackled. I finished it using “oops” paint and thrift store finds and I’m mostly happy with it. The one thing it needs to be completely finished is new flooring. Right now there is nasty vinyl in there that the previous homeowners installed improperly, so it’s not really stuck down in places–you can pull whole corners up– (it’s the same in the master bath–what a depressing room) and it’s yellowed and gross. If I just don’t look down at the floor, it’s all good; but having the chance to win $$$? That’s much better!

Our laundry room is poorly laid out, so I desperately need to reposition the washer and dryer. My husband is capable of doing the plumbing and rewiring required, but it’s a bit pricey, so the poor laundry room keeps getting pushed down the to-do list. $500 to Home Depot would definitely bump it back up to the top! And make my laundry-filled days that much more enjoyable.
And I love how you made the ferns “work”. Looks great!

Where do I even start? You have to pass through the laundry room to get to the guest room in the house we just moved into (for real :-) and the laundry room is some kind of ugly. I need to rip out the ugly shelving that is there and put in cabinetry, new shelving, and add some organization! And it all has to be pretty if course!

Wow, what an amazing giveaway! With this gift card, I would put it towards a new washer and repainting the room. Our laundry room is also our mud room and has the door off of our garage, so the walls inevitably get scuffed. And our poor little washer… it leaked into our basement this past spring and we have tried our best to fix it to last a bit longer. Fingers crossed! :)

Some great improvements, Emily! I think adding a lamp is my favorite. It just makes it feel more “livable” and I often change loads late at night, right before I go to bed, so that soft light would be nicer to deal with than the harsh overhead light. Our laundry room is also where all of our dog stuff is, so I would love to be able to deal with that in a different way. All the dog food and water drips…ewh. :)

Since my laundry room is between the kitchen and the garage, it is a catchall for items that have not made it to the garage yet – newspapers, magazines and random items I’m unsure what to do with. So it seems what I need most is an organization system.

We’re in the midst of redoing the laundry room now. It’s a tiny room between the garage and the dining room with 5 doors! FIVE!! I’m thinking of building a “faux mudroom” by covering the exterior door (that we don’t use) with wood and beadboard and making the bottom a bench that can also hide the cat’s litter box. Then I’ll just have 4 doors and one beautiful organizing center :)

My washer and dryer are in a closet right off the kitchen. It’s really convenient (as in doing laundry and watching TV) but my 70s ranch kitchen has very little storage! The laundry “closet” is actually a pretty good size so I’m going to get a stackable set and turn the other half of the closet into a pantry. The closet is deep enough I should be able to have the pantry shelves turn the corner. This will create so much room that it makes me a little dizzy with happiness.

My laundry room desperatly needs a make over: top for washer dryer (it’s all rusted), paint, top cabinets, light fixture.

Mine needs a total redo but right now I’d be happy with a counter to fold clothes with a built in space underneath for my cat’s litter box. Because right now, and far too often, the clean, unfolded clothes, in the basket on the floor become alternate litter boxes…grrr.

We are about to move into a very small, not cute house in expensive California and I would be so very grateful for any and all help in making our laundry area just a little bit cuter!

I have a terrific new washer and dryer but just stuck in the basement. I need a real laundry room with storage for laundry items and a drying rack for delicates. Of course lots of pretty details and a folding area would be great too!

I really want to change out our current counters, add a sink and it would also be great to add more counter space over the washer/dryer for folding. Cabinets painted, new rug, mudroom built-ins…..a girl can dream :)

Well…at the top of my list would be a new washer. It is 25 yrs. old and has been broken for almost 3 years! Sure would be nice to have a washer again!!

I literally just finished painting my laundry room the past 2 days (walls, ceiling, trim, doors, shelving) and next on my wish list is a new floor. I need something that doesn’t scream out “Hey you! There’s dirt on the floor! Get to sweepin’!” Having a doggie door is great, but the dirt has stained my current floor so I need a more dirt friendly color floor.

My “laundry room” is a corner of the garage, and I would love to make its corner look 100x brighter and cleaner than it is now. New shelves, a small partition, and a wall mounted drying rack would be a great start.

It’s too bad I couldn’t build a laundry room in the house for $500. Our laundry is in the garage, but I could still use some extra shelving and possibly paint the existing cabinet.

We have a large laundry room but it never stays organized. I need to declutter and start over! We also need a sink and countertop. OH, and I am using a washer/dryer that was my Grandmothers. I bet they are 25 years old.

The room where my washer and dryer are is kind of a junk/laundry room! I would put sheet rock up and tile the floors, put in a ton of storage places and cubbies!
And I would buy a new washer! mine has one speed! LOW! so sad!

    Thanks leAnn
