I wouldn’t say I’m a laundry expert, but after a full year of washing clothes for a family of seven, I’m starting to figure out what works best for us. Well, mostly, for me. Right before the twins came last year, I asked my readers for laundry advice, and I got a ton of it. (You can read everybody’s tips in the comment section here.)
I’ve found that washing a load every day–or even every other day—is too much for me. If I wash as a clothes basket gets filled, I inevitably leave the house, or start another project, and find a mildewed load in the washer a day later. Or, sometimes two days later. . .
I seem to work better with determination, picking one day to do everybody’s clothes. Lately, my laundry day has been on the weekend, which makes me feel more ready for the week ahead. (I also believe it’s worth the investment to stock up on more underwear and socks for the big kids—and pajamas for the babies—to stretch out the time between washing. . .)
I’ve been trying to involve the kids a little. (But, honestly, momma likes things folded a certain way. . .) My four-year-old thinks it’s fabulous to be my main laundry helper, so I’ve designated her as “Chief Underwear Folder.” (It’s all about the title, really.)
I usually do towels as needed a couple of times throughout the week, since there’s less pressure to fold them as soon as they come out of the dryer. I’ve found that folding towels is more pleasant if done late at night while watching episodes of Judy Judy on my DVR. But, maybe that’s just me. . . My plan is to slowly weed out all of the colored towels in our house and go to all white. I think it would make it a lot easier to just throw them all in together and not have to worry about what towel goes in what bathroom later.
What’s your laundry plan of action?
Do you do the one-day-knock-it-all-out method, or do you wash throughout the week?
