Turning our dining room into our home office is still one of my favorite decisions I’ve made since we moved into our house two years ago. I don’t know if it will stay this way forever, but it makes so much sense for our family, for now.
It was a treat to see the room (where I spend so much time) featured in former HGTV host Kelly Edwards’ new design book. Each space is accompanied by a “recipe” of how to create a similar look:
I’ve made a few small changes since I took the photo that appeared in the book. Nothing major, nothing permanent. I just re-accessorized a little, making the overall space more neutral. I still like the orange rug, and may bring it back out eventually. But, I think the new touches make it feel a little more like summer.
And, if you’d like a copy of The Design Cookbook, Kelly Edwards is giving one away to one of my readers. You can enter using the form here:

Congratulations on the feature! It really is a lovely room. I have plans to do a similar layout in my office and have been going back and forth between putting in built ins and just buying free standing shelves! Now that I see yours, I think I am definitely leaning towards the built ins! I have a question though. Since the built ins go straight to the ceiling, did you keep the light fixture in the same spot or did you move it to the “new” center of the room? It looks like it stayed the same – especially with the placement of the windows, but I was wondering about that.
Thanks! – Shelley
Yes, we just left the light where it was. The bookshelves aren’t that deep (around 12″) so it didn’t really affect the center of the room.
Congratulations Emily! That’s so exciting!!
Very cool Emily! Congrats on the book :) xo Kristin

New artwork in the hallway?! Love it! Congrats.
OMG, Emily!! How exciting that you are in a book!
I want to duplicate a small version of your office for me in one of my bedrooms this summer/fall. Yours is stunning. My dining room is used too often for family celebrations.
Love the office and especially the lighting Emily
Love your office! The light, your vase, those shelves. I’ll keep my fingers crossed about the book! x
Congrats on the feature! Your office is gorgeous!
I love your office! One of my favorite rooms (not just in your house). The book shelves make the ceiling appear very high, and I’m a big fan of high ceilings.
Those built-ins….ahhhh!!! Would LOVE something similar in my office eventually. Beautiful room! :)
Congrats on your feature! Well deserved!! :)
That book looks really interesting–thanks for sharing! Congratulations on being featured in a book–soon your room will be on the shelves of Barnes and Noble!

Congratulations, Emily!
That book looks great — can’t wait to check it out…and shriek when I get to your page…’I know her!!!!’ :)
Hi…love what you have done with your office space. One question!! Where do you store your files, printer and cords. I work from home for a large corporation and want a glam office that’s still functional.
Thanks a ton!
Hi Jessica, We had a space in the bookcase built-in for the printer and it plugs into the wall behind it.
I love the vase! Where did you get it?
I think I found that at TJMaxx several years ago.
Would you be able to share with me the gray/black paint color on the back walls of the book shelf? Thanks!
