Storage for the New Bathroom

May 1, 2013

I’ve always liked the idea of using piece of furniture for bathroom storage that isn’t necessarily intended for bathroom storage:

For our  new upstairs bathroom, I originally had my heart set on an open vanity.  But, we ended up probably making the smarter decision and going for one with some closed storage.  (It’s almost finished.  I’ll be sharing pictures with you in a couple of weeks.)

There’s also a small wall (with an angled ceiling) beside the toilet that we left blank instead of opting for built-in cabinets.  So, I’ve been searching high and low for the perfect piece to fit there.  I knew I wanted something open with an industrial feel like this:

I also knew I didn’t want to put a lot of money into a little bathroom corner that few people will ever see (well, except for the entire Internet when I post it. . . ).  And, industrial shelving options aren’t necessarily cheap.

I even considered buying two of these galvanized shelving units from IKEA and adding some wood trim, but wasn’t sure if they would really be sturdy enough.  (Either way, they’re just $15.  I’ve never noticed them before. . .)

But, yesterday, I found this console table here, and the dimensions were almost exact for the wall:Tribeca Console Table from Joss & Main

I ended up having enough Joss & Main referral credit to almost cover the whole cost—which is already a pretty great price right now.  (By the way, you can earn referral credit, too, if you’re not already taking advantage of it.  They give you $15 for every one who signs up through your personal link and makes a purchase.  I’ve been able to order several things for free by waiting and saving my credits.   It’s a pretty good deal.)

I can’t wait for it to get here so I can fill it with baskets and pretties that my 8-year-old son (the primary user for this bathroom) will care absolutely nothing about. . .

Great find Emily. I chuckled when I read about your son. My kids are the same way. I recently re-did the laundry room (you can see it on the blog) and my youngest came home and says, “Cool, you got new these!”. He was pointing to the w/d. Um…not new at all. They are so funny.

I was just looking at a cabinet at Homegoods yesterday with glass front doors. I thought it would be perfect towels in my master bathroom. It was a little pricey so I was considering checking out Ikea on my next trip there.

Love your pick. FYI – we are in a rental and I did use the galvanized Ikea unit in my bathroom – works fabulous! Very sturdy.

I also used the IKEA shelves and they work fine for light use. I wouldn’t call them sturdy until there is stuff on them weighing them down, so not sure how they would cooperate with removing things daily?? Especially if your kids understand the term “gentle” like mine do :)

I so agree! I love a piece of furniture in a bathroom, it makes it feel more relaxed and not so contrived especially if the bathroom is rather roomy, it breaks it up and brings interest :)

I love these pieces too! We have two separate sinks in our bathroom and one of them is a pedestal with no near by counter top or storage. I brought in a vintage sewing machine table to serve as a table beside the sink. I love its warmth and contrast.

I think for bathrooms, it is still alright to have an open concept cabinet/shelving. This is because it is inside, unlike the living hall or bedrooms where people can easily catch a glimpse of. However, if you want everything to look neat and tidy, then closed storage is a good choice. I think the semi open concept wooden cabinet with a few glass shelving is a really nice piece. Neatly folded towels and carefully arranged bathroom accessories can be placed on the open shelves while other unglamorous items like toilet rolls and toilet scrubs can be placed on the closed shelves. The benefit of having such a storage cabinet in the bathroom is that, you only need one piece of furniture to fit in all the necessities and you can leave the space below your sink empty to give that spacious feeling. Additional plain open shelvings can be placed though, if you think you require even more storage space.
