Remind me that I like a dark powder room.
The first coat of dark paint can be a little scary. I worried for a second, but now that it’s all done, I think I love it. (And, I’m glad I chose a small space to go this dark.)
I, of course, used the same charcoal that’s around the rest of our house.
And, after unsuccessfully shopping for new shades for the existing vanity light, I ended up ordering this sconce yesterday. I felt like the powder room (and I) at least deserved a new light after the wallpaper removal saga.
I’m still thinking about the art, and I need to find a few other little pretties. Then, I’ll post the infamous blogger “reveal.” I hope you can stand the suspense. . .
Emily, I am diggin’ it! I totally have a thing for making the powder room a statement room. It is looking so great! xo Kristin
The color is spot on! And the aged brass in the sconce against those walls will look totally fab! Your hard work paid off!
that is stunning! yes, the first coat of dark can be shocking. a few weeks ago i painted the ceiling of our master bedroom sherwin’s refuge (at 50%) and it was dark. but after living with it for 10 days i realized that i really wanted a dark, rich color (the walls and bedding is white). over this past weekend i repainted with tempe star and love the results. that charcoal is a great color choice for you!
I love a dark powder room too! That charcoal is such a great color….I need to find a place for it.
Wow! I really like it. That mirror is awesome too, goes great with the dark color.

I love the color and it will turn out fine! I know the feeling of questioning super dark….I did a dining room in dark charcoal…almost black and it turned out awesome!
Love your blog!

I love it, especially with the brass.
I was thinking that Hillary’s Watermelon painting would look really good in there and pull in some of the orange you’ve used in other rooms of the house. ;)
That sconce is such a score! And I love the dark and even if you hate it, it won’t be nearly as hard to change as that wallpaper!
I absolutely love it! I love the way the brass bamboo mirror works with the color, too. And that sconce will be stunning. Now, kick back and relax after all that hard work! :)
ooo I love it! I went dark in one of our small bathrooms and absolutely love it!
I love dark colors in a powder room. It’s one space where I feel you can go bold and it works. Love the color and the sconce is going to be amazing in there!
Love the charcoal & the brass together….I am crushing big time on the mirror. It is going to look beautiful.

I desperately want to paint a wall in a dark charcoal in my home somewhere and was just recently thinking maybe I could try our little bathroom….it would be semi cheating since it is tiled in white about 3 /4 a way up the wall…but a start, right? Maybe I will go buy the paint today….
Dawn, your comment made me think of this pin I was just looking at this morning:

I think it would be beautiful!
Brave girl. So striking and looks great. Can’t wait to see the blogger “reveal!!” I really like that sconce.
OH I love it! Powder Rooms can be the Jewel in a home!
that is gorgeous!
Beautiful! That sconce and mirror are perfection. Just think of it this way– the dark color makes your toilet look cleaner. ;-) No, but truly, I love deep dark colors. Can’t wait for the reveal!

I was scared when I first painted my hubs’ office dark chocolate, but once everything was in the room and art was on the walls, I was so happy with it!
I know it will be gorgeous and can’t wait to see! Love the sconce, you really do deserve it after removing wallpaper.
Emily, I think it looks outstanding! Just think about all those battrooms we pin that are luxuriously dark. Now yours is too! Beautiful!!!
Love it Emily! Do you mind sharing where you got your mirror?
Good work!
I got a great deal on it during this flea market trip:

Love a rich dark powder room! Love the light fixture too! Things are looking good!
Oooh love the drama! I would like to also do a dark room somewhere in our house too. I think the powder room is the perfect place! That light fixture is gorgeous! Yes, you certainly deserve it for all of that steaming. :)
I love a dark powder room, so dramatic and the perfect space to take a risk. I have no doubt it will become your favourite spot.
I’m betting after you live with those charcoal walls for awhile you’re going to want a bigger dose of it, it’s kind of addicting! :)
Emily, don’t ever think we get tired of your creativity. I love the reveal and seeing your projects. We love the super high dollar magazine work but most of us are working in a home alot like yours. So please keep showing us your talent in your home. We love it! I will speak for everyone.Ha!
so glad the wallpaper nightmare is over. I love the dark paint and that mirror and sconce! Art will make the space!
have fun with it.

Your writing makes me laugh! Waiting on the edge of our seats!!! Love the sconce. Girlfriend, you DEFINITELY deserve a new fixture after that work.
Looking forward to the reveal!
LOVE IT! The powder room is such a great place to experiment with color…and pattern. I’m determined that when we do our reno next year I’m going to hang some crazy, graphic wallpaper in there! So fun. Looks fab!!!!
Can’t wait to see it finished.

No fear!! I’ve painted our teeny tiny smallest powder room ever in old school Philadelphia Eagles green to many compliments. And, I *just* finished painting my DR in BM Hale Navy–going from a super-light tan. Couldn’t be happier. Go for the drama.
Oh, it’s gonna be good! I painted a strip of wall with chalkboard paint, and while it was still jet black before we seasoned it I really liked the color. A dark powder room would be so dramatic!
Cool! I am so loving dark colors lately. And you’re right–perfect for a small space! I’m excited to see the big reveal!
~Abby =)
Our present lavatory is a deep, deep indigo blue, and the one in our other house was a Charleston Green. With white ceilling and trim, these dark colors are fabulous!
I love the direction! Urbane Bronze is the best!
Always interesting, you know why? Well, without saying in great detail, you have an eye for beauty, design and how-to. But your generous spirit and authentic sharing create a kind community. You are not all about Emily Clark and well deserve a spa treatment every month!
Well, gee thanks, Lee! I’m all for a spa treatment every month :)
It’s going to look great! I always remind myself that once I get everything on the walls it will be what I envisioned. Of course, I don’t have any dark walls anymore and I’m kind of sad about that, lol. I’m dying for dark walls, bright furniture, and a bit of leopard.
I recently painted our powder room a dark gray and had a lot of worry when the first coat of paint went on but I love the final result and am sure you will too! That sconce is fabulous by the way!
I am SO excited to see this! I bought a can of med/dark grey paint from the mistint shelf, thinking of painting the powder room with it, but wasn’t sure. Now….I’m sure. :)
Although, our powder room floor is black….hmmmm
Oh I’m excited for this reveal! Really, I am :) Lookin’ good!
I have admired your dark powder room for over a year and finally got the courage to paint my guest bathroom the same Urbane Bronze. I absolutely love it! Thank you for sharing your decorating ideas!
