Things I think about, when I’m alone in my powder room, with a wallpaper steamer:
How much water weight I’ll have lost the next time I step on the scale.
How nice my skin will most likely look after being steamed for so long.
Why any one would ever intentionally choose to sit in a sauna.
How long it would take for somebody to find me if I fell off the ladder and cracked my head open on the sink, knocking myself unconscious.
What funny things I could say to people on Facebook, but probably never will.
If the wallpaper in the other three rooms is really that bad. . .
How much I would charge if I were to remove paper professionally. (A lot.)
Which states the little pieces of wallpaper still on the wall most resemble.
What I would sing if I were on American Idol.
It’s a mindless, hot job, but I’m happy to say that it’s finished! (More on the process later.) One room down, three more to go. . .
Now, I’m going to celebrate. By painting it.
(Yes, you’re right. I did start this project in January.)
PS—Congrats to the winner of the Erie Drive giveaway! Go here to see if it’s you.
I want to know the answer to the last question. For me I would sing “Moon River”. Someone needs to bring back the classics! :)
I never quite figured it out. Something kind of bluesy, I think :)
Haha. Love this post!!
Hilarious! I’ve been there so I can relate! Let’s also remember that you have 5 little ones.. it’s okay that you started in January!
Congrats!! I belong to Angie’s List and they had a deal running for wallpaper removal. I kept thinking of you but I know you are going the “sort-of free after buying a steamer” route. At least you won’t be stuck in the bathroom anymore.
I struggle to have enough privacy to use the bathroom alone yet I’m convinced that I am going to get my hair caught in the whirlpool tub and drown and nobody will look for me.
Fun post!
If you see another deal, let me know–I still have three rooms left!
You are so funny! I must admit I don’t get up on a ladder if there is not someone home and for some reason whenever I take a shower I have to announce it! Psycho, scared me for life. So glad that job is over for you, I know it is not any fun at all, but your thought processes were very FUN!
Happy New Week,
Kathysue
You crack me up. Can’t wait to see what fun things you do to the newly de-papered bathroom. You should ask Heather about that falling and no one finding you thing…she managed to step off her ladder into an exersaucer the other week and almost break her ankle…she had to crawl across the room to the phone for help. So I say, “no unattended projects!” By the way…are you wearing espadrilles to steam off wallpaper? You rock…that is all.
So funny! I feel your pain! My husband hung all of our wallpaper. It was pre-pasted and he slathered more paste on it. Oh, we peeled it off inch by inch!!! We used our clothes steamer! It was like being in a personal sauna.
Looking forward the newly painted room!
Haha! It’s true, so many random thoughts go through your mind when doing something like removing wallpaper. Good luck with the rest of it. Can’t wait to see what you replace it with.

Oh I feel your pain. A few houses ago, I stripped the WHOLE house of wallpaper – not fun. That is why I am SOOO leary of the wallpaper trend, ugh, the thought of removing it!
Posts like this make me both thankful for the freshly-painted and wallpaper-free walls of my first home and deeply, deeply hesitant to ever put wallpaper up–no matter how beautiful and trendy it may be.
Aren’t you glad that the blogging world exists, providing you with a warm, friendly place to share these thoughts?
Haha, this post cracked me up. You’re much braver than I am… I probably would have just wallpapered over it. I cannot wait to see what you do in the room.
Oh Emily, I can SO relate! I just did that in our first floor bathroom – it is just like working in a sauna – such a messy job. As much as I consider using wallpaper now, it always causes me to pause when I think of my wallpaper removal nightmares!
Have a great week – can’t wait to see what you do with your bath.

Oh my! I feel your pain. My kitchen was covered in wallpaper that had been put on raw drywall and then painted over……ugh! I had said before we bought this house I would never buy a house with wallpaper……never say never! Can’t wait to see what you do with the bathroom.
I feel your pain too….but it’s so worth all that tediousness in the end isn’t it? The states in wallpaper scraps….awesome : )
Hooray! I’ve been wondering how that project was going for you…I know with 2 babies and 3 other young kids it was something you had to do in spurts but I’m excited to seeeeee!!
After helping with wallpaper removal twice in my life it was two times too much. That had me convinced to never wallpaper for fear of dealing with the removal system again. I feel your pain.
When we bought our 4 bedroom house 19 years ago it was almost all wallpapered. We are down to two rooms. Hubby is working on the bonus room right now but may not finish it until next year, I think. That will leave the master bedroom. I am hoping that wallpaper will just come back in style so we never have to do that one!

I have those same shoes! Love them! You are too funny. So what song would you sing if you were on American Idol? It would be Alicia Keys ‘Fire’ for me. :) So happy for you that you have one room down. Wallpaper can be such a bear.
i feel your pain! i started removing wallpaper in our hall bath, but gave up after 4 hours…AWFUL! fortunately i found the BEST lady…2 1/2 hours and only $200 later…it was ALL DOWN! :) best money i ever spent…if you were in atlanta…i’d send her your way! ;)
LOVE YOUR BLOG! :)
That is where I would have giving up, and put wallpaper over the other wallpaper :) Okay, not really, I am too stubborn to give up, but should learn to. Also – love that you think about clear skin from a steamer. I always think of that if I am making a huge dinner… how this steam better make my skin glow :)
I can’t tell you how many times I thought about you while removing the 2 layers of wallpaper in my laundry room. I started in Feb and I am just now finishing with repairing the walls. What a messy job that is and it didn’t help that I decided to scrape the popcorn ceiling too. I wondered how in the world you were able to do it with 5 little ones. I wondered if you had given up. I’m anxious to see what you do with your powder room. I’m sitting here with 4 blank walls and wondering, “what am I going to do now”?
I would like to know those funny things you may or may not ever post!
Don’t beat yourself up too much a out it. I just finished steaming off wallpaper in our dining room almost one year to the day after I started. And I only have two kids and no babies. You are doing great.
Ha, ha… I know the pain…mine came off with part of the ceiling:D
This post was cracking me up. Congrats on getting the wallpaper done!

I’ll say this….you are one hard working Mama….one room at a time.

I hate to say this, but to me the worst part of wallpaper removal isn’t removing the wallpaper but scrubbing the glue off the wall afterwards. If you leave any on it will make the paint look curdled. Good luck!
Have you ever considered….
