As much as the kids are enjoying the new den being one big empty space (with a TV), I’m ready to actually have a place to sit. More than anything, I want this room to be really comfortable for our family. It will probably end up being “the ballgame room”, and during the winter months, we watch a lot of basketball in this house.
I’m envisioning a floor plan similar to the one below, with a sectional and a recliner for the man (yes, I’m caving!).
Since this room is going to be heavily used by our kids, my first thought was the IKEA Ektorp in a gray slipcover. The price is right, but I just can’t convince myself that it’s as comfortable as I want it to be. (Besides, how often am I really going to take a slipcover off of a sectional? I’ll let you figure that out.) And, whatever we get, needs to be able to handle a lot of abuse, for a lot of years.
My husband and I were able to get out by ourselves this past weekend and do some furniture shopping—and sitting. And, there are a few things I’ve come to realize. . .
Most sectionals displayed in most furniture stores are not attractive. (But, as a general rule of thumb, the less attractive, the more comfortable. . . )
Sectionals aren’t cheap.
Most furniture salespeople stress me out. (And, I used to be one.)
My husband is instantly attracted to any piece of furniture that contains a built-in cup holder, speakers or a cooler. (It’s so not happening.)
So, back to the sectionals I do like. . . I’m looking for something simple, not too huge, not too deep, and preferably in a darker color (charcoal?) fabric. I did find an option or two, but they were about three times the price of the IKEA one. I feel like comfort, in this case, might be worth the investment, though. . . Do you any of you have suggestions? I’d love to hear them :)
