We’re in the process of making some decisions for the new upstairs bathroom, formerly known as the toy closet. It’s a small space, so there’s not a lot of room for any wild ideas I might have. And, even though it’ll eventually be shared by two boys, I want it to be pretty age-neutral. (It’ll probably also serve as the bathroom for any houseguests, too.)
As I look through photos for ideas, a few themes seem to be reoccurring: simple with industrial touches, contrast (probably in the form of white and charcoal), and mostly open shelving (how much stuff can boys really need?!).

Great, thank you!
Emily, I see where you want to go with the bathroom. Quite handsome and chic!
I love the direction you’re headed! As a mom of boys who use the same bathroom that every guest in our home uses, I have one thought – make sure anything that is remotely close to the toilet can be scrubbed/wiped down. As in no unsealed wood or natural woven baskets. Cause nothing is more annoying than being unable to get that boy-bathroom-pee-smell out of stuff right before someone comes to visit.
Pee-soaked woven baskets. Yes, I can see how that wouldn’t be good. :)
I came here to say the same thing. As the Mother of 3 grown boys who can sometimes still smell the boy ‘pee where I want to’ smell in their now unused bathroom. I don’t know if it is in the drywall or what. The flooring really needs to be something that will not absorb pee or odors and can be scrubbed and bleached.
Boys now have so much smelly stuff as in everything Axe. Teen sweat and Axe is not a good combo. My girls were talking about the smell of their brothers just last night. The girls are 22 and 29 and it is still quite fresh in their memories! (None of the boys were here.)
I’m familiar with that boy smell. I grew up with a brother.
LOVE all of these bathrooms! So classic.
I think they will need deodorant by the case. :)
Love these ideas! I have an antique washstand from my grandparents that I desperately want to turn into a vanity with a vessel sink and waterfall faucet in a guest bathroom when we build our “modern farmhouse”. Do you think that’s crazy to “mess up” that type of furniture? Aren’t people doing this all the time? I just think it would be awesome to repurpose such a special piece of furniture and thanks to Pinterest, (and this blog post) it just makes me want to use it even more :)
I think that if you’re able to turn it into something you’ll use every day, rather than a piece that would just sit in storage, that you’re not messing anything up. I love that idea.
I love all of these. We are about to begin a reno in our bathroom (only1 and it is tiny!)…I have been pinning away. We are planning on using white subway tile with dark grout–and I want an antique washstand. These images are making me really excited to get started!
My 3 boys bathroom … well they are now 19 (twins) and 17 I agree with Ann from above if you can put subway tiles or any tile up on the wall around the toilet go for it!! It is so easy to clean. Loved Momma-Lana’s comment about Axe!
Emily I love to design bathrooms, one of my favorite rooms to design!! Check out my pinboards for bathrooms and my pinboard for sinks. I love the double or sometimes triple trough sinks and if I still had my 3 sons home that is exactly what sink I would have, check it out I think you might like it!

Who knew the conversation would turn to pee? :)

Lovely light filled bathrooms featured in this post. One of my favorite rooms in the house for sure. Speaking of pee, :) I have a feeling you would like my PDF gift on ‘the bathroom as sacred space’ that you get when you subscribe to my site. (http://marjorymejia.com) Good luck with your new bathroom!
I only have one, Emily and I would have never guessed how many products he would ‘need’ at 14, I’m thankful I don’t have open shelving! :)
We’re getting ready to overhaul our master bath, so I’ve been obsessively Pinning bath ideas. LOVE your picks! Thanks for the inspiration!
~Abby =)
I been thinking about a boy’s bedroom too. I love this post. Great ideas.
Love the design style you have in mind! And two boys = alotta stuff! LOL! I have two myself! But that’s what the baskets are for right??!! :D
I’m IN LOVE with the first one. So clean and shiny!
Lindos banheiros. Eu também preciso reformar o banheiro do quarto de meu filho. Me destes muitas ideias com estas lindas imagens.
Tenha uma feliz pascoa.
I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and was pleasantly surprised to see my bathroom in this post! It’s the third one posted. I had that vanity custom made for our old house and I loved it. I don’t have any boys so I can’t speak to the pee issue but I love open storage in a bathroom!

Rachel, It’s good to hear from you. I’ve had that picture pinned for a while. It’s one of my very favorites :)
Ha! As a woman with two sisters and three daughters, those ‘pee’ comments made me laugh. :)
It seems that our boys bathrooms function very similarly–ours is also used by guests and is so tiny it’s not technically to code. I also used many of the tricks you mention with black and white, tiling up to the ceiling to make it appear larger, open shelving, etc. But one thing I WISH I had not done that I will have to deal with one day is using natural stone in a boys bathroom. Such a mistake for boys who can’t or won’t aim for the toilet. Yuck…
The first and last image are beautiful!
Happy Thursday!

Weird, the Home Depot ad doesn’t show up in Firefox, but it’s fine in Google Chrome. Just a big blank space in Firefox.
I’m a fan of your bathroom inspiration photos. I have a 16-year-old son, and he seems to be incapable of keeping even his closed cabinets and drawers tidy, so I’m glad the contents are kept under wraps. Open shelving is beautiful to look at, but it’s not too practical unless those using the room are willing to keep things neat and put away, or unless it doesn’t bother you on a daily basis. I’m a bit OCD so I couldn’t handle it, but not everybody is that way!
