Changing Out the Art in Our Hallway

March 25, 2013

canvas painting in hallway

The canvas I ordered from here arrived a couple of weeks ago, and I just got it hung.  I ended putting it in the hallway where the huge abstract used to be.  Although the old painting worked great in the living room of our last house, something about it kept bothering me.  It just felt too brown and orange for our house now.  And, you know if something doesn’t feel right, it’s the one thing I hone in on every time I walk by it. . .

oversized abstract art

(The abstract was a deal, by the way.  I found it on Craigslist several years ago for $125, so I feel like I got the good out of it.  I’m not totally sure where it’s going, but I’m hanging onto it for now.)

It took me a minute to get used to the smaller scale in this spot (it’s 36×36”), but I actually think it works better. And, I must be subconsciously going with a black and white theme around here.

By the way, the painting is by Lisa Golightly, who also has an Etsy shop. I would love to use a few more of her prints around my house.

You know what would be a super fun post? (Wink, wink.) You should tell us about great etsy sites for art.

Love the new art. The black and white palette feels very fresh and modern and juxtaposes nicely with some of your more traditional pieces. I find art so difficult to buy though, especially larger pieces. Its so subjective that its hard to find art that everyone in the family will enjoy.

    Hi Emily,

I had Lisa do a sketch of my girls a couple years ago and its part of my stairway gallery wall – I love it! She is so talented AND she’s from Portland!

On a separate note – I TOO am totally going towards black and white in my own home – what’s with that???????

    Your art looks fabulous.

This is too much! I just did a feature on Kiki and Polly and when I saw your painting I didn’t even put it together that Lisa Golightly was the same artist. I kept thinking how similar they were but I can be dense that way sometimes. :) I love her work too and have been wanting to order that yellow bathing suit girl since I got pregnant with our girl 3 years ago. Maybe it’s finally time. Your new piece looks great and I love the black and white!

Before I knew much about blogs or knew who you were, I saw an image of your old living room and thought it looked so well-put-together. But I totally understand how something you loved in one home doesn’t quite work in a new home. Sometimes it’s because the color scheme is different, or simply that your tastes have evolved. Even just living in my current house for only five years, my style has changed or my colors have altered a bit so that some pieces I was so excited about at one time are now going in my yard sale next weekend. The good news is that everything that sells will allow me to buy more things that fit with what I love today!

No…No…Noooooo I loved your office the way it was. It looked so worldly and collected, not matchy decorated…
