The week before Christmas, I was part of a fun conversation about design trends on Kate’s blog, Centsational Girl.
I wouldn’t say I’m intentionally a trendy decorator. I try to worry less about what’s “in” and more about what I just naturally like at the time. In fact, some times I feel like I’m actually behind on the trends. Sometimes, it takes me awhile to warm up to something until I’ve seen it several times over in magazines or in bloggers’ homes. And, by the time I decide I must have “it” somewhere in our house, someone else has decided it’s so last year :) Again, a good reason to just go with what makes you feel happy. Right?
Besides the design trends post itself, I enjoyed reading the comments about what others see as “in” or “out.” There seemed to be some strong feelings against chevron. See, I told you, I’m obviously behind the curve, but happy nonetheless :)
What current design trend do you plan to incorporate into your home?
What are you completely over?
(If it’s chevron, my feelings won’t be hurt.)
I just bought a chevron tray for my bedroom dresser today. I think that’s the first chevron anything (besides my iphone case) I’ve ever bought. Guess I’m behind on the trends, too. ;) I think anything that becomes wildly popular is sure to look dated eventually. I see a trend from painting a room gray to white lately. That’s all I got.
I’m seeing that, too. After I just painted 80% of our house gray, of course :)
I saw that too, after just painting our dining room very dark (and I love it that way). Oh well.
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one still smitten by chevron. In fact I just put the same rug in my kitchen a few weeks ago, though mine is in gray. I’m hoping to incorporate more fun into my home through color and print this year. I think I’ve gone a little too safe in some places that need a shot of spice. Happy New Year Emily!
I am so glad that so many of you mentioned stripes being timeless because I just bit the bullet and ordered a striped rug for our living room! Great article!
I have that same rug in my entry foyer and I LOVE IT ;) Like you, I don’t worry about trends. I like to decorate my home with what I love.
Personally I think patterns can be trendy, but I don’t think classic patterns can ever be completely over. If it’s existed for hundreds of years, it’s probably safe to use whenever you want.
I can’t really think of anything I absolutely won’t use in my house. If there is something I won’t use, it’s because I think my kids will destroy it. I found a fantastic glass-topped coffee table a few months back but I just knew one of my kids would fall through it. So now we have two upholstered benches instead. Oh, wait, I remembered one. I’ve been avoiding DIY wainscotting, although I kind of want to put it in my two story entry to break up the wall space. But I won’t put it anywhere else unless I have a really good reason.
One trend I’d love to incorporate is wallpaper. If I ever get my kitchen remodel going, I’d like to put it in the adjoining dining area. And the bathroom. Maybe the hallway.
I’m loving wallpaper as an accent. I’ve totally used it all over our new home (it is still new 15 months later, right?). I also still am into gray and my single chevron item is the same exact rug you have. I do have some fabric though that I might do something with.
I think it is so subjective overall but fun to ponder on. Happy New Year, Emily!
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one. I definitely don’t jump on board the moment I spot a trend and end up obsessing about whether I like it or not for a while until I finally make a decision. One thing I’ve thought that may be going out of style is the industrial-chic trend but I guess I’m behind the ball on this one too since I just installed industrial-type light pendants over our kitchen island!
I love your philosophy, buy what you love! I’m thinking of painting stripes in our hallway which I’m sure is already “out”, but I still really like the look. And I’ll never tire of starburst anything – mirrors, clocks, I can’t get enough of them!!
Definitely enjoyed reading the post! And I enjoyed reading the predictions y’all made!! But–overall, I’m with you. I will decorate with things that I truly love. My interior walls are gray and I love them! I won’t be changing anytime soon!
With all the inspiration out there via design blogs and sites like Pinterest it truly is impossible to keep up! Like you I just try to find what I like regardless of what all the opinions happen to be at the moment. Sometimes I land ahead of the trend…by sheer accident…which is fun. This year I am wanting to lighten up…white walls, less knick knacks and simple, nature inspired decor.
I liked reading the post on design trends but then got bummed when I read comments about gray and yellow and chevrons being so over. My baby boys room is gray and yellow with chevrons with some added blue, white and black but since it’s 2013 and I’m resolved to look at things in a more positive light I will say this I design my spaces with what I love and I think the most of us know that even if us avid design blog readers have seen things a million times the majority of the people who visit are home don’t see it as a trend but more as an inviting space! Good discussion! Happy New Years Emily!!
Can’t believe I’m saying this but…more modern. Modern country.
I’m not jumping to get the trends, I’m trying to wait till they’ve been around a while and I’m sure (hopefully)I won’t tire of them. Too much wasted money on trends I tired of quickly in the past.
I am over seeing chevron and trellis and stenciled walls EVERYWHERE! I’m also a little over chalkboard paint.
Nope I’m not tired of chevron! I like trends, but only in small doses!
Nope I’m not tired of chevron! I like trends, but only in small doses!
I hope I do not get sick of chevron any time soon! It is all over my house! I have the same Ballard rug in gray. Love it!
When I think of a design “overdone,” I think of toile. I grew up with my grandmother, mom, and aunt all wallpapering that pattern in every hallway. Did not like it then and when it went crazy on everything a few years ago, I only disliked it more. Hoping to not get tired of chevron :-)
I am not tired of chevron, altho I don’t have any of it in my home yet. I still see it as fresh- Nate Berkus just had a bunch of chevron vases in his collection at Target?!
I am seeing more white too- which I didn’t realize until I just read House Beautiful last night and decided to paint our family room a soft white- which is a big departure for me. My 8 yo daughter commented last summer about how I always paint everything gray, gray gray! So I took that as my cue to stop with gray. I also copied your navy walls – I painted my entry the same deep navy you had in your old house. I might be glad I didn’t jump on a striped wall because that seems to be going out too, altho I still love it.
I am with the poster above about chalkboard paint. I like the look of it, but in my house it would get dirty quick and look terrible all the time. It definitely feels like a trend that is passing.
Not over chevron. I will agree with the trellis stencil trend needing to stop.
I had noticed the same thing – there’s lots of chevron haters out there! I’m just about to do a colorful chevron accent wall in my daughter’s room so obviously I’m not on trend :-) Happy new year!
I see chevron on its way out… and I’ll happily wave goodbye. Along with chalkboard walls, wall decals (that read “bless this home”, etc), birdnests (I’m probably alone on this one) ;)
I’m over bookcases. They look clutter-y in my house. Im also over mirrors on fireplaces. more turquoise please!
