Bedding for the Girls’ Room

October 1, 2012

I haven’t blogged about the girls’ shared room lately because I’ve stalled.  But, I did add new pillows recently which has kind of sparked my interest again in getting their room finished.

(I think my lack of enthusiasm comes from the amount of stuff I find scattered everywhere in their room on a daily basis.  Dirty socks, happy meal toys, beads, candy wrappers, pictures of Justin Bieber, hair bows, lip gloss, books, crayons, rings, pipe cleaners, scribbled notebook paper. . . I could go on and on and on.)

The pillows were a family affair.  My aunt made them for me, and my sister (who has an Etsy shop) embroidered each girl’s initial.  I think the best policy for kids’ bedding is to keep it inexpensive so that it’s not devastating to replace and simple so that they can actually make their own beds (well, in an ideal world).

(I knew the pillows will have a high probability of being abused so I went with an inexpensive fabric.  I love the fun prints and prices available from Premier Prints, especially for kids’ rooms.)

For their beds, I’m sticking with plain white sheets (bleachable!) and these soft cotton blankets:

 blankets

For extra warmth, I’d like to add a duvet folded at the end of the bed.  I’m thinking of trying these duvet covers from Ikea:

NYPONROS Duvet cover and pillowcase(s) IKEA Yarn-dyed; the yarn is dyed before weaving; gives the bedlinens a soft feel.

cute. Love that little bit of girly lace peeking out on the pillow case! I think I have the same pillowcases that go with the duvet from Ikea (in a different color)–the fabric is surprisingly good and I love the covered button details.

Know what you mean. Been wanting to update my daughter’s room, but every time I set foot in there, I think, what’s the point;)? Plus, she has a very strong decorating opinion which doesn’t match mine. Hers reminds me of the stuff I liked way back in the 80s. Love the look you’ve got so far.

I love the color combination and the fabrics. I’ve been putting off my boys rooms for the same reason (minus Justin Beiber). And, I’m trying to figure out how to decorate around their Xbox posters.

Beautiful! I love all white bedding. I know some cringe using it for kids/teens, but it is bleachable and looks so crisp. My daughter actually took a white duvet for her dorm room and loves it. While everyone else has crazy patterned comforters they are sick of already, she loves she can change out accessories if she gets bored!

Beautiful! Good gracious, girl! How do you get so much done with all your little ones (and not so little ones)?? These days, I’m considering myself one step ahead of the game if I VACUUM! Also? How do kids accumulate so much “junk”? My boys do it, too. I do a “purge” a couple of times a year, and it all seems to come right back. :)

I completely feel your pain over the bits of EVERYTHING that ‘collect’ in girls rooms! Having two precious ones myself, we have the same thing going on over here. However, teenagers have less collections, BUT the mess is replaced by smells – a sort of mix of Justin Beiber/Taylor Swift/Pink/Abercrombie perfumes and dirty socks….lots of dirty socks!

Love the combination of fabrics, Emily! You’re smart to keep the rest of the bedding simple — in a few short years, their space will be even more chaotic! yes, it’s possible. :) Even likely.

Did I miss a post about where the babies are sleeping? I’d love to see how it’s working for you in the nook.alcove of your room!

Your polka dot girls rooms sparked well-designed kid’s room around the blogland…and I know these will be the same! Love the monogram and bright colors. And the pretty girl!

Oh, and something must be wrong with your kids, bc mine never have anything random or disgusting in their rooms?! And especially not things that induce a gag-reflex hiding under beds!

    Hey Emily,

First, those are super cute fabrics and I love your idea of using bleachable sheets! Second, I wouldn’t recommend that duvet set. I just used in the boys’ room I decorated and his mom reports that the red stripes bleed when he got sweaty at night. Just thought I’d let you know. I was pretty disappointed because I’ve never had problems with Ikea bedding before now. :(

I have them on the girls’ beds now and the same one on our bed. They’re soft and easy to wash–and a great price (I always wait to shop at Kohl’s when I get the extra 30% off coupons for card holders).
