After yesterday’s post, I got lots of emails from other people with bay windows asking what we used to hang the curtains on angles:
I encountered this problem in our last house, as well. Here’s where I will confess that we bought the cheapest, thinnest IKEA rods last time around, cut them with a hacksaw and just butted them up together. If you were to look closely, you’ll see they’re not actually connected and not very pretty. Fortunately, none of our guests ever stood up on their chairs and examined them :)
My lucky dad had the pleasure of being here for this project and we headed to IKEA last week with the same idea in mind. Then, we found THESE:
It doesn’t look like much, but it’s actually a rubber rod connector! Yep, it’s bendable so that it’ll fit any wall angle. How smart is that? (And, why didn’t we think of that??) Since my dad knew he was going to be hanging the curtains, he may have been most excited of all :)
When I looked at the IKEA web site, I didn’t see this exact one but I did find one called the “Racka” which looks like the same thing:
We also used the longer Hugad rods ($5.99 each) and these finials in white ($4.99 for a pack of two). Since I had to buy five rods, IKEA ended up being the cheapest option. We used a hacksaw to cut them down to size. I went with white so that the rods would blend into the wall, giving all the attention to the curtains.
Also, for the curtains, I had two half-width panels made for each window (the original fabric was 54” wide). I forgot to take a picture before we hung them, but there are back tabs on the back of each panel:

Ange–Great question that I should’ve covered. No, they’re not functional. Since we have the blinds, we’ll never pull the curtains.
Angled or bay windows promote openness, so structurally, having curtains over the casement is the ideal setup. Since you’ll have light coming from more than one direction, curtains will help a lot in limiting entry. Blinds are fine, but they’re fairly noticeable in the setting. Curtains are the more flattering choice in this case. I love the color and print of your drapes, by the way. :) It lightens the atmosphere of the space.

I have a similar situation and I used a bay window rod I found at Lowes. It has the same rubber, bendable connectors.

I have the same angled windows, but I needed my curtains to be functional. I found these doodads called “rod connectors,” or “swivel socket,” on amazon to connect the rods at angled corners (around $10 each). You just have to make sure your rod size fits into the connector. My curtains slide right over, and if you get the same color as your rods, they’re pretty seamless looking.

Great find. It’s always a challenge with those curved or bay windows. I’ll have to keep this in mind next time I’m doing one and need rods.

What a clever idea to sew tabs on the backs of the drapery panels. Absolutely no problem by-passing the brackets with that technique!

Had no idea about the Ikea corner thingies. In my bay we did the same thing from your old house except I put the panels on both rods, on the angle, to hide the abutting hardware. It works.
I don’t know about now, but a few years ago when we did this, Bed Bath and Beyond had hardware specifically for this challenge too. I will say the rods are more substantial looking than IKEA and definitely cost more, which was a bummer.
I love coming across these golden nuggets of info, Emily. Not only is it so super cool that you can transform tab top curtains into hidden tabs (why didn’t I ever thing of this!), I also had no idea that Ikea had any kind of product like the rubber connector. Another great post!

Love this look! Question: I have a similar setup. The only difference is where your window is on the left, mine is a door. I would love to have curtains but have struggled with how to do it and it look balanced. Right now I have natural wood blinds. Any advice would be so appreciated!

how do u cut the hugad rods? which part of it? I have an L-Shaped glass window which is 80 inches on one side and 17 inches on the other. I need to cut the rod for the 17inch windowall. Any tips on how to do this?
The rods are hollow so we were able to easily cut them with a hacksaw.
Hi, what about truly angled windows?? These bay windows are within walls that come together in non-standard angles. But the windows themselves are standard rectangles. But my window in my bedroom is angled in the sense that it’s triangular at the top! Like this: /\
My bedroom is right under the roof — like an attic, basically.
How do I hang up curtains on that? I’m trying to find hooks or whatever that I can attach individually at an angle without using a rod and then simply hook curtains through each one. What would such devices be called? And are there special curtains (also with a special name) for such a purpose?

Hi Emily! I realize that it’s 4 years since you wrote this post, so I hope this message reaches you well. My husband and I just bought our first home and we have two bay windows to hang curtains on. We appreciate your blog post and plan on using the same system in our dining room. Unfortunately, both the HUGAD and RACKA rods for the side windows are too long, so we’ll need to cut them down. Exactly which part of the rod did you cut with the hacksaw? We’re assuming that it’s the non-finial end, but we just wanted to make sure.
