Thought you might like to see the latest addition to our breakfast room:
We replaced the lighting with a chandelier I found on Overstock. This was what was there before:
I ordered this one because it was big and it was a good price for the size. Plus, I figured I could make it a little more modern by ditching the shades and adding globe bulbs.
I don’t know about you, but when I order from Overstock, I rely pretty heavily on the customer reviews. Everybody said the same thing about this light. It was a great price but a pain in the neck to put together. After three hours of assembling on a Sunday afternoon, my husband would agree:
I personally think it was worth his effort :)
And, on a side note, Overstock didn’t pay me for this post. I just like to tell you what I think about things because that’s what I do . . .
You might recognize the farmhouse table from our old dining room. I started out using the old chairs in this space, too, but it was amazing what crud my kids could cram into the caned backs. I found these chairs on Craigslist for a great price, and they’re so much easier to wipe down.
Next up? Paint and curtains.
The look on your husband’s face is precious :) …my husband refuses to replace any more light fixtures – I just wish I knew of your great taste before the last one he did replace went in! Your fixture is awesome – Looking forward to seeing the paint color!
Too funny! I definitely think it was worth the effort too!! :) For some reason— i tend to forget snout overstock—i need to keep them in mind! And love the painted chairs!!
Emily, I love the play of black/white going on in your dining room now! I am anxious to see what paint color and curtains you choose!!! ~Kim
I love your new light! I’m on the hunt for a new chandelier for our dining room and I think the one you bought would work for us. Not sure about the labor intensive part though. Looks beautiful in your home :)
What our husbands do for us, ha! I have seen that look before :).
Loving this room Emily!
That’s not a look of happiness on your husband’s face lol.
I like the present color of the walls. What do you have in mind?
I often see that face with light replacements! To Funny
I love that new light and what you did to it. It does give it a modern look. I love overstock and the fact there are usually so many reviews to rely on.
Yep, he looks thrilled, ha! That picture alone should be your customer review :D It looks awesome though, and what a great idea to use the globe lights – I’ll have to remember that!
Looks fabulous! Where did you get your table?
Those bulbs make it. It looks wonderful!! Can’t wait to see what you decide for paint and curtains!
Love the chandy and the room – it’s coming together nicely!
looks great. Your husband’s face is priceless. My hubs made the same face as I happily came home with two new kitchen island pendants that I bought with some birthday money. Now i’m on the hunt for something over the breakfast table too.
looking forward to seeing your kitchen area come together.
thank you so much for the crayons in the wooden bowl idea!! i had a wooden bowl full of random junk and crayons EVERYWHERE!!! now, they are nicely together on our table. thanks again!
Nice husband.Mine wouldn’t be so helpful. I would be putting it together myself! It is all looking great!
The expression on hubs face…hilarious! I’m quite familiar with that look. The fixture is perfect!!! The size looks so good in there!
I changed my chandelier bulbs out a while back to little globes with the Reveal lighting and WOW, what a difference. I am learning it is the little things that can make a HUGE impact. Quick question, I am thinking of reupholstering a couple of wing back chairs and an antique gooseneck rocker that belonged to my great-grandmother and was given to me by my aunt. Is it as easy as some of the DIY blogs make it look or should I steer clear? Thanks for your advice!
I suggest you tell your husband how sexy and cute he looks putting that light together. Just as men do when they take out the trash or whatever chore you hate to do. Praise him to the heavens. Perserverance pays off. The light looks great.
I am off to Lowe’s to find globe bulbs for my dim dining room. Thanks for the idea!
That looks lovely! I think the way you modified it is great. Your dining area is just so pretty. :-)
Your husbands expression is priceless! lol The new light looks fantastic
love the new chandelier! as i tell my husband, it was definitely worth the work! the things they do to keep us happy!!

Haha, LOVE that pic of your frustrated husband! Everything looks great!
Your hubby’s face is PRICELESS!! and good call on the modern bulbs! love it!
Well you’re a lucky lady to have a hubby that would spend 3 hours of his Sunday putting together a chandelier. Pretty sure that wouldn’t happen over here:) Looks amazing and worth the effort.
Love that new light…looks fantastic over your table. I have definitely seen “that look” before while trying to assemble something. The best was the time we opened the instruction booklet and they had a picture of a monkey with a screwdriver in his hand! Ha! But my hubby was not laughing hours later…
Thanks for making me laugh- that picture of your hubby!!! OMG!!!!! :)
That picture of your hubby with your caption made me literally LOL bc my hubby feels the exact same way about hanging light fixtures. Ha!
Oh that is a happy husband…..good thing you have not been married 0ver 20 years…cause I don’t think he would have done it…speaking from experience :) Loving those bulbs!
Great update! I am amazed you guys get as much done as you do. You certainly have your hands full!
Hi Emily, I’m a huge fan and on the hunt for a farmhouse table that will hang in there with my twin boys and daughter. Where did you find it? prob some amazing craigslist find, right?!
Love that chandelier !! Just glad I was not the one that had to put it together. We ordered one last fall from them and I think there had to be at least 100 pieces – a
Thanks, everybody! For those who asked, we bought our table from Ashley Furniture several years ago. We bought the set with the matching chairs but I ended up selling those on Craiglist because I wanted something more mismatched (of course).
@Holly About the DIY reupholstering. . . I’m not the one to ask. I’ve never attempted it, nor do I have plans to. I am thinking it would be one big disaster if I tried to do anything more than recover a chair seat :)
Jenny at Little Green Notebook probably has the best step by step tutorials for upholstery projects. Good luck!
Love the chandelier but the chairs caught my eye first! Bright white chairs are beautiful and really stand out. I love your table too. :)
i have the EXACT same “before” chandelier over the dining table in my rental house. it is just so…meh. nothing hideously wrong with it, but not a great looking fixture. no one else seems bothered by it but me. good to see you know a “meh” fixture when you see it, and replaced it!

Hi! where did you get those lamps from?
Wow, that chandelier looks incredibly fantastic! Great job seeing so much potential in the overstock item! You have a gift! :)
xo,
Jen
I’ve been catching up on your blog most of the morning without commenting, but after laughing out loud at your husbands look while working on the chandelier, I had to say something! Too funny!
I’m loving how your home is coming together little by little. It looks great Emily!
“…but when I order from Overstock, I rely pretty heavily on the customer reviews.” – We share the same approach, Emily. Checking credible reviews and feedback lets me have a quick look into the furniture’s attribute and functionality. =)
