This door by far gets the most in-and-out traffic in our house. And for that reason, it’s usually covered with dirty handprints and who knows what else. . . . Since it’s a pretty dark little hallway, I decided that adding a color to the door would help to brighten things up and hopefully disguise some of the dirt.
I’ve also been wanting to try Annie Sloan chalk paint, especially the color “Arles.”
It’s next to impossible to get a good photograph with the lighting in this spot, but once the color was on the door, I would describe it as a shade somewhere between cheddar cheese and a school bus.
How’s that for descriptive?
I’m not sure if it was the surface of the door or the texture of the chalk paint itself, but it ended up taking three coats for good coverage.
After one coat. . .
After three coats. . .
I also have the Annie Sloan soft wax, but confess I still haven’t gotten around to it after painting my door a couple of months ago. Any thoughts on if I really need to do this?
By the way, if you’re interested in ordering chalk paint, I got mine from Jenny at the Back Porch Mercantile.
Have you used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint? What did you think?
How are you going to use this new door? Are you going to write grocery lists on it? Or things for the kids to remember? I’m interested in hearing how you’ll use it! I’ve thought about painting my pantry door to use as a central station!
Oh, the kids don’t even know it can be used to actually write on :) I just liked the color and thought I would try it in this spot. We have another chalkboard in the hallway so I have no plans to let them know they can write on the door, too!
cute, lady!!! hey – how are you feelin?!?!
hey! I used Annie Sloan Chalk paint on our banister and ended up using a clear matte gloss lacquer over the top to “seal” it a little more and give it more of a finsihed look. It has also helped GREATLY in holding up. Two little 3 and 4 yr old boys hands all over it every day and it lacquer has prevented any chipping or rubbing off! I’ve used the wax before on furniture pieces, but found it to be a little “sticky”. I love the yellow color you chose!!
love love love it! What a happy difference it makes in that hallway! thanks for showing the stages between coats, too.
Love the color. So bright and cherry!
Hi Emily –
I’m speaking as someone who has used Annie Sloan paint quite a bit on projects and I would say that you should give it a light coat of soft wax just to make it washable otherwise when you want to wipe a hand print off you’ll also take some paint off too. I hope this is helpful. I love how you used it to brighten up the hallway. It looks great!

I’m a sucker for a good pop of color! It looks so bright and cherry, perfect for a busy hallway.
I love the door and the adorable handprint art on the wall over the hooks! Definitely going to steal that idea :) ~ gina
Great color! I don’t think you even need the wax.
At first I was skeptical about ASCP because it seemed like it was taking to “shabby chic” look to new heights of popularity, and that’s just not my personal style. But I just sold furniture at a market and used BM Advance paint on some pieces and ASCP on others, and the chalk paint was miles more convenient. I’m going to experiment with different top coats to see if I can get an enamel paint look with it, and if I can, I might start using chalk paint on all my pieces.
Dont you just love ASCP! I have never thought of using it to paint an interior door! great idea!! I cant believe you are still doing DIY stuff while preggers! you rock girl!
Love the colour! I’m interested to know what material your door is and what you did to prep it before painting…
I recently painted my front door with ASCP (Provence) and I love it. I too was frustrated with how many coats it took but I’m sure it was because of painting it on metal (in my case). I didn’t wax mine because it’s exterior and I don’t really have the wear and tear issue there. If it was an interior door I probably would do a very light coat of wax.
I just purchased my first can. I have a few wood pieces to experiment on and then I will take the plunge on some furniture and if that works out well I will attempt the Bannister. Oh my goodness, I hope it all works out. I love, love, love your yellow door. Thanks for sharing…
I love this happy door and little hallway! I still haven’t gotten around to using any of her paint but it always looks amazing.
Looks fabulous in the hall. How fun and what a great way to add color. Hugs, Marty
I’ve been wanting to try that paint for a while now. The color is so fun on your door!
Haven’t used it yet but thinking about it for a small chest of drawers. But your door makes me smile. By far one of my favorite colors. Such a bright spot now. And heck no, the kids should never know they can write on it! ;)
Love the brightness it brings to the space. The color is very cheery!
Hi Emily! Love the color – what a great way to add some brightness to a dark hallway! I’ve never used annie sloan chalk paint, but want to! My entryway is dark as well so I recently added a bright ombre table, I love how a fun color can liven up a dark space!
Hello Emily,
My name is Janet and I am a Stockist for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™ Brand Decorative Paints and I would advise at least one coat of Clear wax for protection…especially with little fingers around.
LOVE that you chose Arles…I adore that color. Did you know that Annie chose that name because of a town in France where they have cliffs that are that gorgeous hue. How beautiful must that be to see?
I would also like to let your readers know that if they find the wax to be ‘sticky’ that is almost always an indication of using too much wax and not wiping off the excess before it is left to dry and harden.
Apply your Clear Soft wax with a wax brush or a soft lint free rag…massage it into the paint and immediately wipe off ALL excess. It should almost feel dry to the touch. If it feels tacky or slippery at all wipe again. The wax that is needed to protect is absorbed into the paint…you do not deed it on the surface. It is NOT like waxing a car.
Resist the urge and wait 24 hours before buffing with a soft cotton cloth. You can check ou http://www.anniesloanunfolded.com for more tips on using CHALK PAINT™.
Lovely job on your door…enjoy!
I’ll be back for more decorating fun for sure.

That looks fantastic!!
SO WEIRD!!! I showed a pic from pinterest to hubs last night of a yellow door and said, ‘I think this needs to happen somewhere’ — and he said, ‘how about the back door leading to the garage. it’s always nasty.’
and i’m sure his ‘always nasty’ wasn’t a dig to my housekeeping abilities, right?!?!
Yours looks great, and now I’ll def follow suit!
Looks great and I covet the color! I just made my own chalk paint by adding plaster of paris to regular paint and then used SC Johnson Wax to save money & it worked out great. My friend just used AS paint on an old buffet and she also hasn’t used the AS wax yet…it looks awesome without it and feels super smooth! Love, love the mustard color though! Hope you are feeling ok…hang in there :)
Looks great! I know exactly what you mean about the handprints, I have the same on our gargage door…yuck! I want to try ASCP on a dresser that has been patiently waiting in the garage for a facelift! Thanks for the tip on ordering…
Love the color. I have wanted to try some of this paint as well. The blog http://www.missmusatrdseed.com uses this paint all the time too. She resales most of her furniture but she gives great tutorials as well.
So fun, Emily! The yellow is perfect. It makes that hallway so bright and fun.
Great advice from the stockist. I’ve had issues with the wax too and need to follow her advice. The yellow door looks awesome!
This yellow looks amazing!
I painted my front door in a deep black, yesterday, now I`m wondering how it would look in yellow…;)
Damn…
Lovely greetings…

I was going to weigh in with my feelings and experience with the wax, but the stockist said it all. My first piece of antique furniture that I refurb’d in “Provence” ASCP looked beautiful and I thought I might use a wipe on poly. (Can’t get the furniture maker’s mentality that Dad instilled in me out of my brain…they love their poly.) I decided to truly go with the program, Annie’s that is, and I haven’t looked back. The finish is gorgeous. Not shiny, but not dull. Just perfect. Less is truly more: slathering more will not yield a better result. Good luck, and put your feet up. Please.
It looks sooooo good!!! I’m usually not a fan of painted interior doors but you’ve totally done it right. It really adds a lot of interest to the hallway!
you MUST soft wax with your AS clear wax. Less is more, work fast with no distractions. If you leave it un waxed it will wear down over time, if that is alright with you then you dont need to wax. you can also dry buff it with a clean dry rag. that the finishing touch I prefer with ASCP. It looks SO GREAT. Excellent job!
Truly gorgeous! How inviting is that small space now? Love it.
I love this. You chose such a happy color..it really brightens the space and makes your home look fun!! Thanks for the great idea (again!!). :)
Thanks for sharing, Emily! I’ve been wanting to buy some and I just used your link and got myself 3 cans! ;) I’m going to do my playroom floors and kitchen table. Your door looks fantastic!
love, love, love the color – what a great way to brighten up a simple hallway!
Love the color. And, those hooks! Fun hall.
Emily- I think it turned out fabulous! You have great choices in design and color. I know you have inspired me and others to not be afraid of those bright colors. I am very happy you enjoyed your experience using this great product and know it will last a long time with lots of happy little people running through it. As your stockist, you know I am going to advise you to wax it unless you plan on using it as a chalkboard. With the hard use a door takes, I would wax it. Good luck with your new additions and I look forward to working with you again soon! :)

Yes, yes , yes, wax the door. Clear wax will make the color more vibrant AND protect it. I just painted a vanity table then clear waxed it. I put a glass of water on it and it still looks the same. So wax away-it’s easy. Put it on then buff, buff. Just running your hands over it after it’s buffed will give you all of the information you need. FYI, Annie Sloan’s Dark Wax just gives it a more “antiqued” look. If you put too much on, you can “take off” the dark with clear to make it just right. Love the bold color!!!!!
Wow! What a great pop of color! Loving this…
Love the door. Now let’s see the hallway with all the kids stuff back on the pegs. You know, how we really live ;)
The door looks so sunny and pretty!! Great color! Love this post because I used her paint and wax recently and could use some tips! Thanks to all your followers for the advice!
That yellow door is a stunner…..good call for a boring area! Now it is singing….
Your door looks fantastic, great color choice!

Amazing what some color can do! And I love the color that you chose. It looks fantastic!
If you want to make your home really look really beautiful , paintings are the best way to do it believe home looks very well decorated . If you are looking to find Oil Paintings Reproductions at very economical price or cheap rates, you must visit wahooart.com
That’s a pretty color choice! You’ve been able to liven up the door with the new color, and it is quite relaxing to the eyes. The Arles color is lovely in a sense that it lends a different tone to the entryway. It definitely brightens things up. Well done!

Love ASCP! My first project was a doosey! I painted all the wood paneling at our cottage-waxed and distressed it but wow what a transformation. Wish I could post a picture here :
Is this door still this color? I did a search because in your new post I spied a green door I thought. I love the green and the gold. What is the name of the green color?
The pop of color is great! What a fun hallway, now! You definitely need to wax your door, however. The Annie Sloan paint is not complete without the wax. Not only does the wax make the finish durable, but it also protects the paint from scuff marks, water marks and just pain wear-and-tear. It also richens the Annie Sloan colors and makes them what they were intended to be. I have painted many pieces of furniture with Annie Sloan and there is NO comparison to the look & feel after the wax is applied – best of luck :)
