I’m possibly considering pulling the trigger on a pair of these lanterns from Overstock.
But, for some reason, I’ve caught the indecisive bug. They’re on sale (an extra 10% off) on Overstock today and I have a coupon code.
They would replace these two lights over the island and the table. (This is a picture from the day we moved in.)
A very bad mock-up:
I can’t decide if I’m considering because they’re a good deal or because they would be great in the room. I know you all are an opinionated bunch :) So, I’m ready for your opinions. And, if anybody owns this light, I would love to hear your feedback.
Thanks for helping a girl out.
It’s a no-brainer. I love them! Go for it. :)
LOVE. Do it!
If the size is right for the space, I love them!
Yes! They would add a lot of character to the room.
I’m a fuddy-duddy…..if you’re unsure it’s better to wait. Beautiful fixtures!!

I think that they would look great! One thing I did notice is that the “candlestick” is bright white. I might consider finding some that are cream (most lighting stores carry replacements) so that they don’t stick out like a sore thumb!

Love the lanterns! I think they would be absolutely perfect over your island. Get them while the are on sale!!)
Maxwellhouseinteriors.blogspot.com
I REALLY like them and think they would look great in your kitchen, but, if they aren’t striking you as “the lights” then I would wait.
I think the lights are great, but I wonder if it would look a bit small over your table? I don’t know what size it is, but the light is only 13″ x 13″. Just some more food for thought :)
They would be great in that space!
If you don’t buy them I will!!! THey are awesome!
Even the mock up looks good! I say go for it!:)
I love them but not for the kitchen. But that’s just my opinion;)
Buy them! Buy them!
Oh without question BUY…they are gorgeous!!
Do it! They look awesome!
DO IT! They would look great!!
If you have even one doubt I say wait and don’t get trapped into something because it’s a good deal. Since it is your house and not a client there is no timeline, right? So why not wait until you find your kitchen’s soulmate?
I always ask this one question,”Would I buy these if they were NOT on sale?” If not then I do not, and If I would I go for it!! I love them, by the way!! Kathysue
I really like them! I think it will add some charm to the kitchen. Lanterns are always a great choice (:
Ha, you can blame the indecisiveness on the TWINS! But, for the record, I think the fixtures are grand. I’d say go for it!
Hmmm, I’m a bit indecisive too. My rule of thumb is if the decision to buy isn’t crystal clear, I pass. If I talk myself into something, I almost always regret it.
That said, the lanterns are great, but I’m not sure they suit a kitchen. Just my opinion.
Buy! you can always return.
They’re great! Buy ’em!
Nothing like opinionated friends to weigh in! I think they’re a great choice!
I say YES!! I installed a lantern over my island after seeing your former breakfast area. You have to do it :)
I’m going to go against the flow…they are pretty, and they would probably work, but this fixture is EVERYWHERE in the design blog world these days. Maybe you are hesitating because it’s a little over and you a craving something a little more original? Not trying to put words in your mouth, but I am all for going with your gut. If you are pulling back, don’t do it. You should love your home estatically (sp?)!
No question – I say get them!! I love the finish on them but you could also spray them a fab color – ala Tommy Smythe in the latest issues of House and Home. Can’t wait to see what you do!
I really really like them and they seem very ‘you’. (What, we don’t drink coffee together every morning? I beg your pardon, we do.) First of all…thanks for not posting pics of lanterns from certain lighting companies that slews of bloggers favor that nobody can afford. Because it makes me feel poor.
Second of all, those are really great, not trendy and so super affordable that to me you would have no guilt if you decided to change them in a few years.
Thirdly, indecision in decorating land is not the same as in other worlds…it doesn’t mean you don’t really like them. The choices are so endless that it is crippling. Pull the trigger.
absolutely!
can you buy 3 and put the 3rd over the eating area?
they’re on sale, great reviews, timeless – yes!
I have this light. I bought it from Pottery Barn a couple of years ago to put over my breakfast table. A year after, I replaced it with a different lantern and moved this one to a different room, which I don’t really love. It’s too gothic-y. Also, the glass fogged (just from standard dirty film build up) so instead of trying to keep it clean, we removed the glass inserts and I like it better open. It makes very cool shadows on the ceiling. For the price, it’s fine. I’ve posted some pics for you on my blog here:

Hi Emily. I am a long-time blog follower of yours. With have this exact lantern hanging over our master bed. We absolutely love it, so much do they we were considering buying more. They are very large- both my husband and I were surprised by the size and weight. But great purchase.
They are great! I got mine from Bellacor for a great deal.
Definitely buy them
Go for it… I think they’d look amazing!
I have this exact light! I love it, and I always get compliments on it when people come over!
Those look perfect! I say do it!
Hi,
I’m new to your blog. I think the lights look great and seem reasonably priced. Would it be too much of a hassle to return them if you don’t like them in person?
I like them, but I wonder if they would put off a lot of heat. The good thing is it would be bright enough.
I like them and think they would look great, but if you’re having doubts, hold off.
Love them!!
I have this light in a hallway and love it. However, it’s really big. Make sure you check the measurements carefully – you need a really big space with high ceilings if you want to hang two.
You know there are so many great options out there if you’re not just dying to have them I would wait until you see some that give you that tingly all over feeling. Happy New Year, Emily!!
Depending on the size….love them over the island. Wondering if they are the right size for over the table. May need to be bigger.
I love them and love to shop with Overstock.com. Always good stuff and quick shipping.
I like them. My one concern would be whether the scale is right with the size of island.
Rayna
I absolutely love them! Anything “lantern” is a go for me!
IF yo don’t do it, I will! ; )
That is a great light, it will look great!
I feel so inglorious saying this after all the positive feedback, but I’m a huge huge believer in the right lighting and I don’t think the ‘new’ light adds much value. I think it may be a good buy, but based on your style and where you are going in this new home, it doesn’t update the look of the kitchen AT ALL. It looks like the vibe in your last breakfast nook. Once it’s styled to your tastes, that light may be fine in the situtaion, but based on what you’ve said you wanted to do and push boundaries, I think you should up the ante on the lighting (fixture).
I think they would look great! Go for it, especially since they are on sale!

I would say a definite NO!! Lighting is so hard to return if you don’t like it!
If you do go for it make sure they are on dimmers..the clear glass and then being able to see all the lightbulbs..it’s really annoying to the eye if you need bright light.
Drum shades would look great!
Don’t do it!!!
You’re right – this is an opinionated bunch. I could go either way but that is no help. Anyway, your new kitchen looks very similar to our new kitchen! I find myself thinking about it all the time b/c I’m in there so much – I haven’t posted about it yet but I’m keeping the cherry cabs and trying to accessorize/dress up the rest….can’t wait to see what you do! :)
I love them, but I see there are differing opinions here. Maybe the scale is too large for the kitchen to be home to two of them? I don’t know. I just know I saw them and I loved them. :)
Happy New Year Emily,
{did not forget about you <3
Thank you for sharing this amazing photos.
Love,
Sima
I’m late to the party here … but if there’s something holding you back, I’d not do it. They’re great lamps and it’s a great price, but usually your gut saying “mmm, no, no, not yet” is a clear sign not to do something.
I would pass for now but keep the lights in your shopping cart. Overstock *always* has sales.
Emily – I bought the exact same fixture from overstock this past summer for our foyer – absolutely love it. Buy I say.
Go for it! I have the same lantern over my dining room table & love it. I often get asked where it’s from & they are surprised by the answer. Enjoy ! :)
Buy! Love the lantern look over islands!
Eh….. I like them but I don’t think they’re right for your kitchen.
Personally…. I see you painting the island a contrasting color to break up all that wood and then going for something a little more industrial looking.
To buy for sure!
I like them I think they are beautiful but my advice is actually something I’m doing this year and maybe it will work for you if I am indecisive I pass, I’m only going to purchase things for my house if I see it and think OMG I can’t live without it! Good luck!!
Do it! They’re pretty much amazing! You know you want to!

Love them! They look great!
Love them! They look awesome!
Love them, but will they provide enough lighting for a kitchen?
My client just bought this for her laundry- they are “ok” but the iron is very lightweight & looks inexpensive. I would say its ok for a laundry room or a guest room but if you want these front & center in a dining or kitchen I would say no. I have seen better made lanterns at Lowes & even Ballards (you can get a designer discount at Ballards too)
Hi Emily,
I think they will look amazing in your room, however, don’t buy the ones from Overstock! I bought them only to return them – they are made cheaply and it shows. I ended up paying a bit more and got the same look from Pottery Barn.
I have the lantern above my 4-seater round kitchen table and I LOVE it. It’s a perfect size for that. Having 2 above your island may be a bit overwhelming as it is a decent size.
Amy@winecountrymama I think you should go for it! They would look perfect there!!!!!
I love Overstock. Do they have good reviews? Are you planning on making any other major decorating changes in the kitchen? I think the Overstock lights make a real statement, and I like that they are glass and have a big presence in the space.

I am the self-proclaimed “Queen of Indecisive”!! I don’t think you should get them. I just don’t think they look right in your kitchen. If you are debating them now, you will regret it later…I also happen to be the “Queen of the Returns”!! Although… I completely love your designs so maybe I am just wrong. Good luck!!
I like your decision re the lamps. What you have is lovely, and these are very common now. My personal test of worthiness is the Need vs Want. I try to avoid Wants, and save them up for Christmas. My grandma had the same stuff for over 50 years, with small additions from her kids as they “made good” (like a kitchen/bathroom addition, LOL). But, I try to use her example as my guide, as well.
love them! can’t wait to see your photos on the blog after you install. I have been considering them myself and have purchased other ones from overstock and they turned out great.
I didn’t realize till now that you had gotten a Jute rug for your living room. We got one last Nov.(2010) for our living room and I love it! We got the 10×12 size from Rug and Home in Gaffney. I wanted the “touch and feel” test too so I went there and felt like their prices were really good. It has “eaten our dirt” for the most part but I am a little terrified of what will happen when I have this baby and he starts crawling/walking around with milk sippy cups…I guess you and I will see how that goes…lol. You chose a beautiful rug and it looks great in your living room. I also love the slipcovered PB chairs. We are renovating one of our rooms to be a new family room and will be biting the bullet and buying a sectional couch brand new. I have never bought a brand new piece of furniture (lol) so it will be a splurge for us. I am trying to decided between the PB Comfort sectional with down or the Ballard Designs Davenport sectional with down…can’t decide!!
